NAKED THEATRE IS BACK at – Urban Death Vegas

REAL. RAW. NUDE.

Well, it’s me. It’s him. It’s T.I.M. I went to Urban Death Vegas, from Zombie Joe’s Underground Theater, directed by Jana Wimer, this last week. Before you get excited about a horror play intown, I must warn you that it is rated R. Children under 17 are not permitted unless they have a parent/guardian with them. I was pleasantly surprised by the work, particularly the level of thinking outside the box and the scare factor which this play went to great lengths to achieve. Zombie Joe’s Underground Theater has been operating since 2005 with its main location in the Los Angeles area of North Hollywood, where it continues to perform to sold-out shows and garner rave reviews. Being the 20th Anniversary, Jana Wimer and Robert Bullwinkle didn’t hold back in creating one of the best shows Las Vegas has ever seen. One of their other acclaimed shows, Abandon, which is inspired by the Marquis de Sade has earned recognition as Best Shock Theatre by Las Vegas Weekly and Top Haunts by haunts.com.

Urban Death Vegas is not for the faint of heart, as it is meant to shock you with terrifying psychological terror, grotesque beauty, absurdity, and an edgy humor to wrap it up in a well-put-together horror production. With sound design and lighting, coupled with the audience’s imagination, it creates a terrifying experience through wordless vignettes. You never know who, or what, will appear when the lights come up.
The cast was enjoyable. Tyler Borresch stood out to me with his enthusiastic, outrageous, and risk-taking acting, which I found very refreshing. Giulia Piolanti, a wonderful gift from Italy, delivers a bendy, twisty performance where she gives it her all. What a breath of fresh air she was. Jess Sabine, stood out as a unique, one-of-a-kind performer who was different and special. Bailee Bob Sveen was another memorable performer who would be worth going to see just for her alone. A Mormon skit in particular stood out to me, as it will cause people to talk, making it fun and exciting with its social commentary. The other cast members, Randy Hample, Sammy Jo, Karla Lagunas, and Austin Parrales, had all collectively helped bring the play to a show-stopping experience, as well. We can’t forget the people who work behind the scenes, bringing the show to life. Jake Harrell was amazing at setting the mood and hiding the monsters in the shadows. Jana Wimer, Toby Allen, and Jake Harrell used sound design to complement the light show, making you shake in suspense as you waited for the next disturbance. Music was composed by Christopher Reiner, Kevin Van Cott, and Joseph Bishara as they finalized the experience to leave you in a foreboding place. It really went for the Grand Canard School of Horror experience, which I would like to see happen more in Las Vegas. The best way I can describe the show is stepping into a Halloween scare house of mirrors. However, the horror comes to you as you are bound in your seat with a constant sense of unease. Jana had this to say about the show, “I am honored to once again work with Vegas’s incredible and diverse talent, and I’m excited to introduce the beautiful insanity of Urban Death to this magical city.”

Being there for the opening weekend really illuminated what is truly terrifying about life in LasVegas. All I can say is go before the run is over! Experience a riveting show and support raw, experimental, fun theater the way it should be. From this reporter to you, I highly recommend catching the last shows of Urban Death Vegas. When you do, be sure to tell them Tim sent you.
