Mark Ty Hildreth (Van Hammer) November 1, 1959 – April 2026

Mark Ty Hildreth, known to wrestling fans worldwide as the larger-than-life “Heavy Metal” Van Hammer, passed away at the age of 66.

Born on November 1, 1959, in Hebron, Maryland, Mark served in the United States Navy before pursuing a career in professional wrestling. Standing 6’6″ and weighing approximately 280 pounds, he possessed the imposing physique and rock-star charisma that made him a natural fit for the spotlight.

In 1991, World Championship Wrestling (WCW) signed Mark to a high-profile contract and introduced him as Van Hammer, complete with pyrotechnic entrances, heavy metal-themed music videos, and a signature guitar that became part of his larger-than-life persona. Billed as a powerhouse with rock-and-roll swagger, he quickly became one of the most visually striking figures of the early Monday Night Wars era.

During his WCW tenure (1991–1993 and 1997–2000), Van Hammer competed in memorable matches against stars such as Cactus Jack (Mick Foley), Sid Vicious, and others. He later found a home as Major Stash with the Misfits in Action and as a member of Raven’s Flock, bringing his unique intensity and showmanship to some of WCW’s most chaotic and entertaining storylines.

After retiring from the ring around 2003, Mark built a new life in Florida, where he operated a successful home improvement business. Though the wrestling spotlight dimmed, his impact on fans who grew up watching WCW remained strong, remembered for his towering presence, thunderous entrances, and the unapologetic spectacle he brought to the ring.

Mark is survived by family and friends, as well as a dedicated community of wrestling fans who still crank up the volume when they recall those classic Van Hammer moments.

Instead of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory may consider a donation to organizations supporting veterans or wrestling industry wellness initiatives.

The wrestling world has lost another piece of its colorful 1990s tapestry. Rest in peace, Hammer. Your heavy metal anthem may have ended, but the echoes of those arena-shaking entrances will live on in the hearts of fans forever.
