JUST JOSHING: Evel Pie

Sometimes comics are not about the end of the world. It’s not always about high stakes. Sometimes it’s about random monsters, and motorcycles, and evil green ooze and pizza. And it even comes with a tie-in to another cool restaurant in Vegas.

The Book

Evel Pie

Letters by Francisco Zamora

This is the true beginning of Amaya’s story, back from Golden Tiki. This is the origin of her hopping through different dimensions. So if you’ve read my review on Tiki, you’ll see a few spoilers. Okay, warning aside, let’s go.

Amaya is a big fan of Evel Knievel and finds herself transported to see him live. While she’s there she gets the attention of Mike Reynolds, who is a douchebag we’ve all met at one point in our lives. He tries to convince Amaya he’s a real man, and he gets a real rejection.

Not content to leave it there, Mike grabs some green mist and, in an attempt to ruin some evil pie pizzas, spawns the monstrous human-eating pizza monster. This beast is out of control, and only Evel Knievel himself stands a chance.

This book is just the best kind of silly nonsense. Tim Chizmar and Rik Offenberger craft a silly, fun filled adventure that introduces the main character Amaya, who will be crisscrossing dimensions at the end of the issue, Evel himself, who uses the power of his bike and the magic of pizza toppings to combat the evil monster, and Mike Reynolds who gets his comeuppance. This comic is pure whimsy and the tone set by these two fits that perfectly.

Arnaldo Dos Santos Ferreira Junior has a flair for both whimsy and monsters and manages to do both spectacularly. He balances the books very unserious story with some fun monster moments, and the ability to make the pizza monster menacing.

Like in the Golden Tiki there’s a TMI soapbox which homages Stan’s Soapbox, and the letters inside the issue are hilarious and creative. I miss letter columns in comics. Francisco Zamora does a fun job playing in those confines well and leaves a decent comic.

This is a fun piece of Evel Pie. Definitely worth a look if you go to the shop, and is a great comic book. Everyone did a fantastic job.

The Business

Vegas is done, and I’m heading back to Canada as I type this. By the time you read it, I may be there. I’ve managed to travel about 14k miles overall. I have to say the trip has been a memorable one. I’ve gotten to meet quite a few amazing people in the United States. To say that the American people are awesome is an understatement. All races, creeds, colors, and people treated me well in my ups and downs backpacking across the states. I want to say thank you to everyone who helped me get somewhere in the journey. You all rock.

I’m always looking for new work. If you’ve got stuff to write, things to edit, or things to podcast, I’m your guy. Check me out here, or my Substack at Joshua Pantalleresco dot Substack dot com. I’ve got more trips in the future and more things to see. In the meantime, I hope you all are rocking and doing the things that make you come alive. Doing this adventure has reminded me how short the time we have.

I’ll be back soon, guys. In the meantime, enjoy the funny books that are out there.
