JUST IMAGINE! November 1962: The Zenith of Superman

DC Comics offered 29 titles for sale during the month of November 1962, a dozen of them devoted to superheroes.

And of that dozen, seven were Superman-related titles.

Why? Well, the top-selling comic books in 1962 were Superman (740,000 copies sold per month, on average), Superboy (605,000), Lois Lane (490,000), Jimmy Olsen (470,000), Archie (457,689), and Casper (436,253).

The top-selling Batman title also included Superman. World’s Finest Comics came in at 420,000, just below Action Comics at 435,000. Then came Batman at 410,000 and Justice League of America at 340,000.
“Dell titles fissioned off to go to Gold Key, which accidentally only reported subscription sales during the year,” noted the Comichron website. “While the lack of data on the Disney titles deals a blow to the overall average for the year, substantial drops are still seen for many of the high-ranking titles, perhaps due to the 12-cent price increase fully taking hold.”

The top-selling Marvel comic, Modeling with Millie, appeared in the 44th spot with 143,476, just below DC’s humor title Fox & the Crow at 145,000.

That, however, would change.
