Is It Too Early to Get a Nintendo Switch 2 Case?

If you love Nintendo products, you’re probably excitedly anticipating the release of the Nintendo Switch 2. This new console could offer everything that the Nintendo Switch offers and then some, so millions of people are preparing to start playing on day one. That said, there are still a few months to go before the release.

So does it make sense to invest in a Nintendo Switch 2 case now? Or should you wait?

Dimension Ambiguity

One thing to keep in mind about your decision is that the dimensions of the Nintendo Switch 2 aren’t perfectly known yet. We have a good idea of how big this console is going to be and how it’s going to be shaped, but we don’t have absolute confirmation at this time. In fact, we don’t even know the release date for this console yet. If you want to be absolutely certain that your case has a perfect fit, it might be wise to wait; at the same time, there’s no harm in shopping early to see what options might be available.

Pros of Shopping Early

There are several advantages you might enjoy by shopping for a Nintendo Switch 2 case early.

  •         Avoiding demand. Nintendo anticipates extremely high demand for the Nintendo Switch 2, and for understandable reasons. The original Nintendo Switch is one of the highest selling video game consoles of all time, and despite the fact that it was released almost a decade ago, it remains extremely popular with fans. Nintendo’s planned successor promises to be even more powerful and even more capable, so it’s only natural that video game fans are going to be ravenous for it. This greatly increases demand for peripherals like console cases, which could drive up prices or make it harder to buy the case you want. If you shop for a case early, you’ll likely avoid some of the problems with this spike in demand.
  •         Day one preparation. After purchasing your Nintendo Switch 2, you’ll probably want to play it right away. You don’t want to make a separate shopping trip to purchase a case, nor will you want to play or travel with your console without some form of protection. Shopping for a case early is a way to prepare for day one, so you can hit the ground running and start playing this new console the moment it reaches your hands. This is especially important if you plan on traveling with your console.
  •         Building excitement. For some people, shopping for a Nintendo Switch 2 case is a way of both indulging and building up your own excitement. It’s something that you can purchase while you wait for more news and information about the console, and it can get you thinking about what the experience of playing it might be like.
  •         Potentially attractive prices. This could also be a meaningful opportunity to score a better deal. Because the console isn’t out yet, some sales outlets might be willing to reduce prices.

Cons of Shopping Early

However, there are also some drawbacks that you’ll need to keep in mind before making this decision.

  •         Fit issues. As we mentioned earlier in this article, we don’t have full confirmation of the specs associated with the Nintendo Switch 2. We have a good approximation, and reasonable confidence in that approximation, but nothing will be finalized until the console ships. Accordingly, there’s a small chance you may encounter fit issues if you shop and buy a case early.
  •         Availability and options. After the Nintendo Switch 2 is released, a flood of retailers will attempt to offer every type of case imaginable, in the hopes of capturing some portion of the excited Nintendo audience. But this early in the process, there may be limited options available, which means you may not be able to find exactly the type of case that you want.
  •         The wait. You’ll be able to preorder a Switch 2 soon, but we don’t know the exact launch date at the time of this article’s writing. If you purchase a case too early, you might be stuck with it for months before you can start using it. This may or may not be bothersome for you.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, the case for a Nintendo Switch 2 is going to be a relatively inexpensive and relatively unimportant piece of this video game console puzzle. If you shop early and purchase something that you end up disliking, you’ll have plenty of time to exchange it for something else once you have more details available. If you’re looking to get a head start on the competition, or if you just want to start satisfying your eager anticipation, you might as well start shopping early for the right fit.
