We are deeply saddened to share the news that Louis Small Jr., a beloved creator and influential comic book artist, has passed away. A pillar of the comics community, he was not only a master of his craft, but also a kind and supportive friend — especially to the independent bookstore and comic shop that shared the announcement of his passing.
Born in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, Small began his professional comics career in the early 1990s. He first captured attention with his work on Vampirella for Harris Comics, becoming one of the defining artists of that era.  Over the years, his distinctive good-girl art style left an indelible mark on titles across the industry, including high-profile collaborations for Marvel, DC, Valiant, Image, and Dark Horse publishers. 
One of Small’s most celebrated works was Codename: Knockout, co-created with writer Robert Rodi for DC’s Vertigo imprint.  His art gave life to the series’ playful, espionage-laced tone, combining dynamic action with a retro sensibility inspired by mid-century pin-up aesthetics.
Beyond Knockout, his versatile career included illustrating Supergirl (DC), Dark Dominion (Defiant), Ka-Zar (Marvel), and various other projects.  He also contributed to the DC Universe card series, showcasing his skills beyond traditional comics. 
In interviews, Small shared that his journey into comics wasn’t paved with formal arts education. He taught himself to draw from art books, and after serving in the military, he pursued his passion with determination, leading to his breakthrough at Harris Comics.  His background and humility made him not only a talented artist, but a source of inspiration for aspiring creators.
He was also known for his warm presence in the fan community — attending conventions, interacting with readers, and giving back to the people who loved his work. The bookstore’s tribute speaks of him as “one of our biggest store supporters” and remembers him fondly as “our great friend,” a testament to the genuine connections he built.
Though he has departed, Louis Small Jr.’s legacy endures in his art, which continues to inspire and delight fans across generations. His bold lines, expressive characters, and evocative storytelling will live on in the pages he helped shape.
