Absolute Batman # 18 – The Poison Ivy arc concludes on a powerful note, with its fast pace highlighting Batman’s former friends turning into villains and betraying him while working behind the scenes, which promises more intrigue ahead. One of the most shocking moments is when the Court of Owls is introduced through Martha Wayne’s past ties to them, which escalates into a tragic conflict (**NO SPOILERS**). The issue opens with a crosscut of Batman and Poison Ivy’s battle, blending the A and B plots smoothly and maintaining the story’s flow. Flashbacks reveal how Poison Ivy became her monstrous self, while subplots explore Killer Croc’s status, Jim Gordon’s relationship with Batman (which longtime fans might find surprising), and a Batman-themed bar that adds depth to Bruce Wayne’s everyday life, making him feel more grounded and emotionally richer. With intense action and strong momentum, the story explores the lasting impact of Martha Wayne’s connection to the Court of Owls, a storyline likely to be discussed for years. The latest issue also shows Batman willing to cross lines he had not previously considered in his fight against Poison Ivy, adding complexity to his character. Although the pacing can feel chaotic, it’s clear Gotham continues its descent into darkness, with Batman prepared to face whatever comes.
Action Comics # 1096-Superman fans are currently enjoying Mark Waid’s run on “Action,” which explores Clark Kent’s early days as Superboy with enthusiasm and delight. However, that tone quickly shifts as Superman’s status in “DC K.O.,” and the Super-Titles enter the ‘Reign of the Superboys’ storyline—a transition that wisely eases readers into the coming chaos (though a few may not welcome Booster Gold’s appearance). While this issue primarily serves as a setup for the “Superboys” event, Waid maintains an excellent grasp of Clark Kent’s character. Clark faces multiple crises and, after initially freezing, recalls his mother’s advice on focusing, which helps him save numerous lives. These classic hero moments are wonderful examples of how Superboy’s heroic legacy is forged—one that will shape him as Superman. This issue once again brings both heart and action (no pun intended) to the forefront just before the ‘Reign of the Superboys’ event accelerates, promising a return to this fond era once things settle down.
Venom # 255– The latest chapter of “Death Spiral” pushes everything to the limit, blending mystery and action while heightening the tension between Eddie Brock and the Carnage symbiote. The dynamic between Spider-Man and Venom grows even more complex—especially now that Mary Jane Watson is the host of the Venom symbiote. Together, they face the ongoing threat of Torment, who relentlessly targets anyone connected to Peter Parker, Mary Jane, and Eddie Brock. The issue’s humor occasionally clashes with its chilling slasher elements, which can disrupt the flow, but the horrifying cliffhanger (no spoilers) more than compensates. As a result, the sense of real danger stalking these characters feels stronger than ever, making the anticipation for the next installment even greater.
