What If….? Goofy Became Spider-Man # 1
Assorted Crisis Events #5 – After millions of years trapped in the same sixty seconds, Anna must readjust to life on the straight and narrow. Yet even outside the time loop, all roads seem to lead back to where they started. This issue of ‘Assorted Crisis Events’ elevates storytelling with a narrative meant to be read clockwise, allowing readers to experience the pain and sorrow Anna endures while caught in this chaotic time loop—aging mentally as a reminder that trauma never truly goes away. It also highlights that, with time, things can get better… at least, that’s something for us to hold onto. While this issue features the return of the time-traveling man from the first issue—whose presence ties together the strange events of the previous four—it may evoke feelings related to suicide and self-harm. These topics aren’t mocked or exploited as mere plot devices; instead, they are handled with respect and serve as a powerful example of bold storytelling, taking creative risks with panel layouts that pay off with striking results. This issue also demonstrates an awareness of trauma done thoughtfully, making it a prime example of why Assorted Crisis Events is one of the most groundbreaking anthologies to emerge from Image Comics.
Spider-Man vs The Sinister Sixteen #1 – J. Michael Straczynski wraps up with one-shots of unique team-ups with style. Now he takes it up a notch with his intense yet delightful sendoff, thanks to some luck. Peter Parker invites Mary Jane Watson to an exquisite French restaurant where Thor and She-Hulk, Doctor Octopus and his date, along with Eddie Brock, Magneto, Mystique and Destiny, Doctor Strange and Clea, The Kingpin, The Leader, and Mister Hyde all gather as diners (even Squirrel Girl was in attendance). This scene signals an explosive dinner filled with anger and egos. JMS’s script shines, partly because of the humor and partly through scenes where Peter takes both Doc Ock and Eddie Brock outside, reminding them they have lives beyond battling Spider-Man. Thor almost blurts out his secret identity, creating plenty of laughs and adding more charm to this story, which already has readers eager for the upcoming battle between heroes and villains, depicted in a beautiful two-page spread by Phil Noto. Straczynski also highlights an important element: various heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe can take a day off without trying to destroy each other. That shows these characters can have a sense of normalcy—even if just for a short time. This one-shot is undoubtedly the perfect ending for JMS’s series of team-ups, blending humor with an enjoyable story from start to finish. If you’re a fan of JMS’s run on “Amazing Spider-Man,” then this one-shot is a must-read. Who knows, maybe we’ll see more JMS team-ups soon.
What If….? Goofy Became Spider-Man # 1– In an imaginative twist, Goofy is reimagined as “Spider-Goofy,” the latest entry in the “What If…?” series. This one-shot comic takes a playful dive into the origins and backstory of Spider-Man through the lens of Goofy’s unique charm. In this delightful retelling, we see Goofy Parker, a hapless young man with a penchant for clumsiness, discover the profound significance of the phrase, “With great power comes great responsibility.” The story creatively reinterprets classic elements of Spider-Man lore. Instead of the traditional Uncle Ben, we meet a motorbike with a sidecar, a cherished possession of Goofy’s aunt that she is reluctantly forced to sell due to financial struggles. This humorous take adds an endearing layer to Goofy’s motivation. Meanwhile, chaos ensues when the infamous Beagle Boys swipe the prize money from a talent show Goofy enters to showcase his newfound Spider-Powers. His attempts to navigate his super abilities spiral into a series of hilariously unpredictable misadventures that align perfectly with his character. This carefully crafted narrative respects the original Spider-Man while infusing it with Goofy’s signature slapstick humor, creating a crossover that promises enjoyment for both Marvel enthusiasts and fans of classic Disney. The comic beautifully balances fun with heart, maintaining the integrity of both universes and resulting in a high-spirited tale that captivates readers. The story concludes on a vibrant note, leaving fans eager for more whimsical explorations in the “What If…” series.
