Assorted Crisis Events #3 – The most recent edition of “Assorted Crisis Events” presents an intriguing and poignant narrative of parallel worlds that elicits an emotional response as it unfolds. The story commences in two identical towns named Hearth, which exist alongside various dimensions. The destruction of Hearth-Two results in the relocation of its inhabitants to Hearth-One. Although all individuals and their alternate counterparts initially coexist in harmony, it is not long before feelings of alienation and resentment infiltrate the atmosphere. From the outset, it evokes a sensation reminiscent of “The Simpsons,” albeit with a darker and more intense undertone. Good individuals within a small town resort to questionable actions when confronted with challenging circumstances. This issue distinguishes itself as a strong contender for the best due to its bold examination of identical worlds and the individuals who inhabit them, as well as its themes of compassion amidst confusion and crisis. Even as the narrative takes a somber turn, it serves as a cautionary tale emphasizing the importance of trusting empathy rather than hastily concluding judgments. This work is essential for anyone who appreciates narratives concerning parallel worlds.
Giant-Size X-Men #1 – Marvel revisits the timeless theme of time travel in “Giant-Size X-Men #1,” as Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel, finds herself transported back in time due to Legion’s interference with pivotal moments in the X-Men’s timeline. Kamala arrives in the past at a time when Professor X and Cyclops are assembling a new team of X-Men (including Banshee, Sunfire, Storm, Nightcrawler, Thunderbird, Colossus, and Wolverine) to rescue the original members from the island of Krakoa. This homage to the original Giant-Size issue undeniably provides an entertaining experience that will evoke nostalgia for the iconic work by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum. However, the incorporation of Kamala into this context appears somewhat incongruous, as writers Colin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing alter her characterization, causing her to resemble Spider-Man with her incessant dialogue. Instead, she aligns more closely with Iman Vellani from “The Marvels” (which is not particularly commendable). Nevertheless, Cyclops’s recollection of her from the X-Men’s original timeline introduces a charming element that is sure to captivate readers. Additionally, it should be noted that Adam Kubert excels with sensational double-page spreads and traditional visuals that are nothing short of phenomenal. Although “Giant-Size X-Men #1” may not fully satisfy the anticipation surrounding the original story, it commences Kamala’s journey through X-Men history with flair and an abundance of comedic elements that are certain to engage any X-Men enthusiast.
Ultimate Spider-Man #17 – Another well-crafted installment that could have been enhanced by the addition of Spider-Man. Instead, the narrative centers on Mysterio and The Green Goblin instigating a conflict with The Kingpin, while simultaneously offering a slow-burning exploration of Harry Osborn’s “return” and his relationship with Gwen Stacy (full Mysterio mode). This transition introduces an intriguing darkness that only Jonathan Hickman can effectively deliver, given his expertise in strong character development and the intricate weaving of plot threads that yield rewards later. It becomes increasingly apparent that Harry is gravitating towards a more nefarious trajectory concerning the Green Goblin persona. While USM enthusiasts may have to await the subsequent issue for some Spider-Man action, this chapter delves deeper into the Mysterio cult and provides significant character moments. This Spider-Man-free episode of USM is destined to satisfy fans effortlessly.
What If…? Donald Duck Became Iron Man #1 – Like many Disney/Marvel amalgamations, this iteration continues its streak of being enjoyable and lighthearted while presenting a whimsical reinterpretation of Iron Man’s origin in true Disney fashion. Donald, as Iron Man—referred to as Iron Duck—provides the appropriate blend of cartoonish action and humor, enchanting fans without appearing farcical. It aptly captures the essence of The Silver Age of Marvel while introducing an additional touch of flair for good measure. Another delightful Disney/Marvel one-shot that illustrates why comic enthusiasts have a fondness for superheroes, while also offering a brilliant yet witty perspective on Iron Man. Highly recommended for any aficionado of Marvel or Disney.
Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
