Absolute Wonder Woman # 2– It’s not easy following a wonderful debut. Still, Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman continue to make waves with this reinterpretation with the introduction of Steve Trevor, and what’s intriguing is the new dynamic between these two that doesn’t feel sleazy (*COUGH COUGH*-Wonder Woman 84 *COUGH*) along with the extreme battles. Engaging dialogue makes this issue so extravagant while feeling unique in its hellish way, and seeing Diana putting such arrogant army generals in their place is just a thrill rush that will not make new readers invested. It helps that the numerous Kaiju monsters still lurk around to give Diana the fight of her life. Absolute Wonder Woman is a triumphant title that is the A+ of storytelling, and it’s a must-read for anyone who loves the character.
Black Canary: Best of The Best # 1 – Those who want to see Black Canary duke it out with Lady Shiva in a wrestling ring will feel right at home, and this series delivers on giving the readers a big fight feel that has elements of boxing, mixed martial arts and course, professional wrestling to perfection and I have to say that this is Tom King’s strongest work to date (The fight commentary alone is pure gold), especially when you take into effect that he can be a solid writer when he’s not focusing on Batman. The in-ring action, along with the dynamic between Dinah and her mother, gives off a gigantic impact that helps drive the story while strengthening Black Canary as more than her being a longtime Justice League member but as a superhero playing the role of underdog looking to take down her opponent, who matches her in both power and speed. Both Comics and Pro-Wrestling fans will enjoy the aspects of this fight, and quite honestly, it looks more appealing than Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul. The strange thing about this issue is that it was written by Tom King. Either way, it’s a solid story from beginning to end.
Hornsby & Halo # 1 – The latest Ghost Machine offering sees Peter J. Tomasi (Known for giving us some of the best stories to come out of DC) and Peter Snejbjerg (Who has not lost a step in his art) present a unique pairing of good and evil in the form of two teens known as Zachary Hornsby (Angel) and Rose Halo (The Devil) coming across as an unlikely duo. I have to say that this series has potential due to establishing the inner workings of their worlds appealing enough for anyone willing to check this out. So far, the Ghost Machine imprint has given us some interesting titles and characters to gravitate to and this pair is a welcoming addition to the imprint thanks in part to Tomasi’s powerful writing and Snejbjerg’s crisp artwork that may feel like it’s straight out of the early 2000s, but this is a title that makes anyone look forward to where this story will go next due to the quirkiness of this premise and Peter J, Tomasi writing an impactful series like this one is always a win.
Justice League Unlimited # 1– THE JUSTICE LEAGUE IS BACK!! It looks like it’s taking a page from the animated series with the same title for the first time in the comic pages, have we been witness to an unlimited league with endless resources, and even with a premise such as this one could fail even with the good intentions in place, luckily Mark Waid and Dan Mora have elevated it to great success that allows you to see this league with a fresh perspective and what’s refreshing it that Waid is not trying to recycle anything from the past JL stories which will bring back fans of this iconic team but the most interesting aspect of this issue is the reinvention of Air Wave (80s babies will know who that is) in a way that’s both wonderful yet frightening (**NO SPOILERS**); Fans will enjoy seeing the mixture of old and new members of this league, but the one member that stands out the most is Star Sapphire where we as readers get o see how she works among such legendary members while being new to being a hero even though Batman , Superman and Wonder Woman will always be the heart and soul of the League, Star Sapphire is aleardy a top contentor for breakout character. This new iteration of the Justice League is coming into its own for this exciting new era while continuing to inspire hope in the face of immense danger. The League has always come back in some form, but this version is a success on all fronts, and things are only looking up for this series.
West Coast Avengers # 1 – The West Coast division of the Avengers was a big deal back in the mid-1980s, so it was quite surprising to see it come back, but I have to say that it’s a lighthearted romp that packs plenty of great action sequences while reveling in its 80s galore. A reformed Ultron (A complete shocker!) and former villain Blue Bolt as members, not to mention Iron Man back in his Silver Centurion armor, and Spider-Woman is back in the fold, which adds up to a fun version of this concept that never comes off as too serious and we’re left with more questions than answers when it comes to Ultron’s status as an avenger and seeing Tony Stark looking for his form of redemption after the Fall of X and his brief marriage to Emma Frost by throwing himself into this team along with bringing in longtime BFF War Machine into the mix and eventually, Firestar is perfect in showcasing Gerry Duggan’s writing; Danny Kim, however, is no Al Milgrom, but his extraordinary art brings such flair that only adds to the gratification that this series is going for. This title’s fun and exciting tone brings an interesting line-up that shows why the West Coast Avengers are simply enduring and after the jaw-dropping ending (**NO SPOILERS**), it will be great to see how the next issue will play out.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around and I look forward to seeing you next time.
