FANTASTIC COMIC FAN: Archie Monday

Archie may not put out the flashiest of comics each month, but you can be sure that you’ll enjoy them, no matter the age. Sure, a Golden or Silver Age story might seem a little dated sometimes, but you’ll also get a good laugh out of the deal. And, you can get lucky, too! More on that in a minute!

Like many publishers, Archie has been getting into facsimile editions, with the latest being Betty & Me from 1965. It marked another spin-off for Riverdale’s teens. Okay, I admit seeing the vintage ads is cool, but you can read countless digital editions, minus the ads. For years now, Archie has been archiving some of its older titles, with Pep Comics the latest getting added. This comic is also a fantastic example of how a comic from decades ago still holds up. You can read Archie Andrews’ first appearance in issue 22 up to 150—that came out in the early 1960s. All of the original 600+ issues of the original Archie series are available, too.

Okay, not everyone is into classic comics, and luckily for you, Archie has an answer! Archie has a long history of crossing over into comics. From Dynamite comes the Archie X The Army of Darkness mini-series, which perfectly melds the two universes. Ash teams up with the teens to battle Deadites when the Necronomicon unleashes evil upon the town. It is kind of hard to do a bad Archie comic because the characters have become so part of our culture that they are almost like family members. It’s fun watching creators create stories that are true to the characters, while still doing something fresh.

Archie can battle darkness in one comic and enjoy spring break in a break towards more traditional stories. Last year, Archie revamped their digest line, but it’s still around! It gives news fans the chance to see what “all the excitement is about”. Fans who know a thing or two will appreciate the classic stories mixed with the new ones.

I admit it was fun to see both Prof. Flutesnoot and Miss Grundy in a solo story in Archie Comics Digest Spring Break. If you’re looking for an escape from what you normally get at your comic shop, you’re in luck! One thing about the digests is that you never know who might appear in a story, and you would be hard-pressed to carbon-date the story because they are timeless, all-ages fun. If you’re looking for an escape from what you normally get at your comic shop, you’re in luck!

And, here’s your chance to get lucky! If you head over to the Archie website, there’s a promo code for fresh Spring merchandise and comics, of course! And, be honest, when was the last time you read an Archie Comic?
