Canada’s Golden Age of Superheroes
Panelists were Darcy Shea, Ivan Kocmarek, and Ramon Perez. Ivan spoke about the origins of Canadian Comics, the two books they are publishing – an updated book about the creators of the comics, and another with almost all 800 covers of the Canadian Comics. Ivan then spoke about various characters, including Johnny Canuck, Nelvana, and how the characters’ names got turned into an Animation Company, Freelance, Thunderfist, Speed Savage, the Penguin, Brok Winsor, The Wing, Canada Jack, and Doc Stearne, aka Mr. Monster. Ivan also spoke about the term Canadian whites and why he doesn’t like it, the process of finding these books and what libraries they are at, the characters’ impact on Canadian Culture, the American comics that were redrawn by Canadians, when RAID got involved in publishing the books, and how some of these characters inspired members of Marvel’s Alpha Flight.
