The professional wrestling world is mourning the loss of Dory Funk Jr., who passed away on August 4, 2026, at the age of 85. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed.
Born Dorance Wilhelm Funk Jr. on February 3, 1941, in Hammond, Indiana, Funk was the eldest son of wrestling legend Dory Funk Sr. Growing up in Amarillo, Texas, he became one of the cornerstones of the famed Funk wrestling family alongside his younger brother, Terry Funk.
A standout amateur wrestler at West Texas State University, Funk transitioned to the professional ranks in the 1960s and quickly established himself as one of the sport’s premier technical wrestlers. On February 11, 1969, he defeated Gene Kiniski to capture the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. His reign lasted more than four years—one of the longest in the championship’s storied history—and included memorable title defenses against many of the era’s greatest competitors around the globe.
Throughout his career, Funk competed for virtually every major wrestling promotion, including the NWA, All Japan Pro Wrestling, WCW, ECW, and WWE. His rivalries and partnerships with legends such as Harley Race, Jack Brisco, Giant Baba, Ric Flair, and his brother Terry helped define generations of professional wrestling.
Beyond his in-ring accomplishments, Funk dedicated decades to training future stars through the Funking Conservatory in Florida. His students included Kurt Angle, Edge, Christian, The Hardy Boyz, Mickie James, Mark Henry, and many others who went on to successful careers.
A respected ambassador for the sport, Funk remained active in wrestling well into his 80s, continuing to teach, mentor, and even make occasional in-ring appearances. He and Terry Funk were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009, cementing the family’s place among wrestling’s greatest dynasties.
Dory Funk Jr.’s legacy is one of excellence, professionalism, and selfless dedication to professional wrestling. He leaves behind an enduring influence on generations of wrestlers and fans alike. His technical mastery, integrity, and passion for the business will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Dory Funk Jr.
