KANSAS CITY, Mo — December 17, 2025 – Caroline Cash, renowned Ignatz and Eisner Award-winning cartoonist, debuts as the new creator of the Nancy comic strip on January 1, 2026, announced Andrews McMeel Syndication (AMS). Cash assumes the role as Olivia James retired after creating the strip for nearly a decade.
Familiar to the role, Cash previously stepped into the world of Nancy as a guest artist during a sabbatical taken by James in 2024. Her deep appreciation for the strip’s legacy, together with her sharp comedic voice, made her a standout choice to lead the next era.
“We’re delighted that Caroline will continue Nancy’soutstanding legacy, which has been a comic page staple for more than 100 years,” said Brent Bartram, AMS President. “We are confident that Nancy’s burgeoning popularity, sparked by Olivia’s invigoration of the strip, will continue to grow under her talented hand, as she will no doubt find exceptionally entertaining ways to highlight Nancy’s attributes and adventures with humor and style.”

Larry Whittington created the strip in 1922 for United Feature Syndicate as Fritzi Ritz. Mr. Whittington left the strip in 1925, and Ernie Bushmiller’s long tenure as the strip’s creator began. In 1933, Fritzi Ritz’s niece Nancy made her first appearance in the comic. Nancy was such a fan favorite that by 1938, the comic’s name was changed from Fritzi Ritz to Nancy to honor the shift in emphasis. Nancy has been a star on the comics page ever since, andcurrently appears in more than 100 newspapers and is a favorite on GoComics.com.
