Artist on the Rise – Gilbert Monsanto

Gilbert Monsanto is one of those comic creators who has quietly built an impressive career through talent, hard work, and consistency. He’s a veteran artist, writer, and art director whose career has taken him from the Philippines to North America and deep into the world of independent comics.

If you know his work, you already know what he brings to the table: dynamic storytelling, strong character work, powerful anatomy, and that classic superhero energy comic fans love. Whether it’s action, fantasy, horror, or adventure, Monsanto knows how to make it look exciting.

Gilbert got his start in the Philippines during the 1990s, working as both a writer and artist in the country’s thriving komiks scene. It was there he sharpened the fast-paced storytelling style that would later become one of his trademarks. He also spent three years as chief instructor at Whilce Portacio’s comic creation school in Manila, helping train up-and-coming artists.

Some of his early credits include Filipino titles like Bayan Knights, Hands of the Dragon, and the 50th Anniversary Trilogy of Darna.

From there, Monsanto expanded into the North American comics market and picked up work with Image Comics. He pencilled titles like Hellcop and Houdini: The Man from Beyond, showing that his storytelling style could shine on an international stage just as easily as it did back home.

Like many modern creators, Monsanto has also embraced the crowdfunding side of comics. Through Kickstarter and independent publishing, his art has reached readers directly, helping support creator-owned books and keeping indie superhero comics alive.

That brings us to G-Man Comics, where Monsanto has become a major creative force. Serving as Art Director, he has helped shape the look and feel of the company’s shared universe. In many ways, his art has become part of the visual identity of G-Man Comics.

His G-Man Comics credits include:

Simon N. Kirby: The Agent
Sgt. Flag
Lynx
First Guard
G-Men United
G-Men Undercover
Global G-Men

Invictus: Outrage
Judah “The Hammer” Maccabee

What makes Monsanto stand out is how he blends old-school comic storytelling with modern intensity. His pages are full of movement, personality, and clear visual action. He understands how to make heroes look heroic, villains look dangerous, and every panel feels like something is happening.

From Filipino komiks to Image Comics to the modern Kickstarter era, Gilbert Monsanto has built a career based on versatility, professionalism, and a genuine love of comics. He’s the kind of creator who keeps the medium strong, no matter where he’s working.
