If you’re a fan of independent comics, there’s a good chance you know Nexus, the cosmic hero created by Mike Baron and Steve Rude. Now, after more than four decades, Mike Baron is returning to the character with a brand-new graphic novel, Nexus: Triplets.
The 72-page graphic novel is currently the subject of a crowdfunding campaign, with Baron writing and Kelsey Shannon providing the artwork.
So, what’s the story?
Three five-year-old children known as the Squiblets share a unique telepathic connection. Unfortunately, the sinister CYNdicate realizes just how valuable that ability could be and kidnaps the children to manipulate financial markets across space and time.
Naturally, their parents turn to the one person capable of rescuing them: Nexus.
There’s just one problem.
The CYNdicate has figured out how to drain Nexus of his solar-powered abilities as he travels through black holes. With his incredible powers gradually disappearing, Horatio Hellpop is forced to rely on something a little more old-fashioned: his experience, determination, and a gun.
That sounds like a pretty fun way to shake things up!
What makes Nexus: Triplets particularly interesting is that this isn’t simply an old story being dusted off. Baron and Shannon have created a complete 72-page graphic novel. The opening act was previously published, but Shannon has revisited and recolored it, then completed two additional acts to finish the story.
And there’s plenty here for collectors, too. The crowdfunding campaign offers different editions, variant covers, digital rewards and other Nexus-related goodies, including Nexus: Scourge and the new Nexus: Deluxe Omnibus.
For longtime Nexus fans, seeing Mike Baron return to his creation is reason enough to take notice. For newer readers, Triplets looks like a fun jumping-on point for discovering what makes Nexus such a unique character.
A cosmic superhero, three telepathic kids, black holes, financial manipulation, and a hero who is slowly losing his powers?
Sounds like Nexus to me!
