This is a world where vampires rule. There is plenty of court drama as Empress Lady Nira Lydian De Winter the First, ruler of Vampirium, is set to marry Proctor Dyce, Arch-Count of the City-Isle of Backlash. Nira is headstrong and refuses to be used or manipulated by this arranged marriage. Her actions also cause plenty of heartache, as the Sister Duchess strongly objects to the wedding.
The Duchess, Her Holiness, is out for blood. The sword-fighting scenes are excitingly illustrated, bringing the conflict to life with dynamic action.
Nira soon finds her situation changing rapidly and joins her human lover, Sir Daven. She also encounters Cap’n Akeyo aboard the V.M.S. Abyss. Secrets await them there, adding even more intrigue to the story.
The gothic, old-style design of the vampires works beautifully. The pirates’ costumes are equally impressive and help establish the book’s unique atmosphere.
The characters are only briefly introduced in this issue, leaving plenty of room for future development. The villain, the Duchess, is ruthless and determined to see Nira destroyed.
Lady Nira is a complicated character. At times you will admire her determination, while at others you may question her choices. She is the kind of protagonist you will both love and hate.
