TCAF 2026: Concrete & Ink: – Mythologizing the City

Concrete & Ink: Mythologizing the City

Moderator Mark Askwith interviews panelists Joe Ollman, Seth, Chris W. Kim, and Robert Sikoryak. Among the topics discussed were why cities are so important to comics and how cities can be turned into characters themselves. Chris spoke about the nooks and alleys of Toronto, and how other media have influenced the way they approach cities in comics. Seth discussed his fictional city in his basement, as well as using the grid, like in Watchmen, to tell stories. They also explored how their use of cities has changed as they have moved to new locations, the contrast between interior and exterior settings, the growing respect for comics, and how cities can be both constantly changing and yet remain the same.
