Marvel Zombies: Red Band # 4 – The latest issue of “Marvel Zombies: Red Band” is a brutal remix of “Civil War” with Captain America and Iron Man (now zombies) going to war, and like the past three issues, this one is once again packed with plenty of twists and entertaining bits, along with some classic homages that fans will enjoy. Especially with the Civil War aspect being firmly intertwined with the zombie apocalypse, this series shows that it isn’t satisfied with coasting on nostalgia, but instead uses sharp humor and much-needed tension to make it appealing, even as the carnage remains somewhat restrained despite the “Red Band” title. The writing and strong character dynamics continue to be amazing factors in maintaining this title’s entertainment value. While this issue has some faults (Peter Parker’s identity reveal, which is homaged, doesn’t have the enormous impact that the original “Civil War” series had), “Marvel Zombies: Red Band” still thrives on fun, twisted themes. With each installment, it proves this fresh take remains both engaging and inventive, leaving readers eager for what comes next.
Sorcerer Supreme # 1– The Scarlet Witch returns in a new series where she assumes the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme after the shocking events of “One World Under Doom” and Doctor Strange’s disappearance. She seems to have taken the role seriously, balancing her new responsibilities with her personal life. Steve Orlando, the main writer known for his success in expanding Wanda’s world without resorting to clichés, such as making her crazy or overly powerful, introduces original elements that align with his previous work—especially her relationship with her children—and adds compelling drama. This series serves as a perfect starting point for new readers who want to experience this version of the Scarlet Witch, distinct from the MCU portrayal that some longtime fans may be tired of. The series offers great potential and elevates Wanda Maximoff to new heights. While her taking on the mantle might not be surprising, it offers a refreshing and captivating take that promises an exciting and prominent run.
Ultimate Endgame # 1– The Ultimates and nearly every hero in the Ultimate Universe face the fight of their lives in this series. The story wraps up this iteration of the Ultimate Universe and pits them against The Maker, so there is a sense of intensity and uncertainty that will captivate readers. However, the story excels at presenting The Maker as one of the most terrifying villains from the original Ultimate Universe. The countdown structure is an effective plot device, making the story more tense and dramatic. However, the Maker’s return feels flat due to limited insight into his plans. This hinders the overall excitement the series could deliver. The end of the Ultimate Universe remains a sad situation, but this event could have been more intriguing with a higher intensity factor. Still, it feels uneven for the most part. The art, by Jonas Scharf and Terry & Rachel Dodson, is also extremely disjointed. Scharf’s chaotic style does not mesh well with the Dodsons’ clean and brilliant approach. Ultimate Endgame still has promise if the creative team can fix these disjointed aspects. If they succeed, readers will welcome the chance to see who survives and who perishes.
