A Very Solid Addition to Solitaire Card Games

If you are a board gamer and own a standard deck of playing cards, you have most likely played at least a few hands of Patience, the solitaire game that dates back to the 1780s. It’s a classic time-killer that most people will recognize immediately.

The concept of a solitaire card game is therefore nothing new, and over the years, there have been dozens—perhaps even hundreds—of variations built around the idea of a solo player tackling a challenge created within a 52-card deck.

Now a new game has emerged: Concealed, from designer Ivan Marić, artist Luka Čubrilo, and publisher Mowl Games. This one is available as a print-and-play offering.

In Concealed, you play cards around a printed board, with the core objective being to play all required cards within 13 turns—or you lose. Before the game begins, you draw one card, which becomes your concealed card for the duration of the game.

“The goal is to fulfill the prophecy of that card by drawing and placing cards around your board every turn until you fill the whole board, except for the two cards that together create the concealed card,” explains the designer.

While there isn’t a great deal here that radically departs from the old, reliable Patience formula, Concealed introduces a clever twist that makes it feel just different enough to be engaging and fun. Adding to its appeal are several different boards, each featuring slight rule variations that help keep the experience fresh.

A definite one to look into for solitaire fans. Check it out at mowl-games.itch.io/concealed.
