This week, I review issue five of “Taranis, The Thunderlord” from G-Man Comics. The story begins with Taranis of the Celts and Donar of the Teutons facing a being who challenges even their strength! Can these two Lords of Thunder rival the cosmic power of… THE ETERNAL!? Eric N. Bennett and Rik Van Niedek form an unstoppable team, creating a story that honors the Silver Age of Marvel Comics (especially “Thor”). It’s both timeless and brilliant, adding excitement as Bennett channels Stan Lee’s classic style—not by directly copying but by crafting a tale that showcases Taranis in all his glory and expands the cosmic scope, enhancing Bennett’s script even with the fast pacing. Rik Van Niedek’s artwork stands out, as he captures the spirit of Jack Kirby—a respectful homage that avoids mere mimicry of his style, instead blending glimpses of his own unique approach. When creative teams revisit old storytelling styles, it can sometimes feel flat or awkward, but Bennett, Van Niedek, Jake Isenberg (the Joe Sinnott to Van Niedek’s Kirby), and the vibrant coloring of Teo Pinheiro deliver an issue that honors a bygone era while forging its own timeless narrative.
