I’ve been a podcaster for almost four years now, and one of the mandates for the podcast has been to explore different comic books that fans might not usually read, from the Golden Age to the present. I have consistently been a big supporter of indie creators and companies. I have even gone so far as to recently launch a spin-off podcast, Fantastic Comic Fan Presents, which focuses on indie creators.
Too often, fans get caught up in the hottest titles from the hottest creators—and that goes for me, too. We frequently don’t look outside those comics, but when we do, we might surprise ourselves with some fantastic comics.
Take Len Mihalovich, for example, who does a lot of indie comics under different imprints. One of his more fantastic comics is Section 12, Section 12, his superhero team concept. In a reality where scientific advances rely heavily on government funding and corporate backing, Section 12 examines the aftermath of experiments that catastrophically fail.
The public only learns about the victories, while the disasters are covered up through every means possible. Section 12 operates as a secret government initiative responsible for containing and resolving these scientific catastrophes. The unit consists of enhanced individuals with extraordinary abilities, most of whom are coerced into serving the government. Len isn’t adverse to taking his comics to another level. For example, Section 12 (Antarctic Special) is a recent three-issue crossover mini-series that represents a significant achievement for Lenovations Press. This collaboration unites their premier superhero team, Section 12, with Tomorrow Girl, a beloved character from Antarctic Press.
There’s another title I like, because it’s a western comic, and western comics are hard to find these days. The Wild West Adventures of Buffalo Bill offers a wildly inventive twist on the iconic frontier showman, blending carnival flair, tongue-in-cheek historical satire, and the offbeat charm of indie comics. This series reimagines Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show as a roving carnival that journeys across the American frontier. Rather than adhering to historical accuracy, this is an intentionally and boldly fictionalized interpretation of Western mythology—and it makes for absolutely entertaining reading!
Another fun comic is The Adventures of Track Suit Man from Lenovations Press, a delightful read—a quirky, unconventional comic that transforms a viral internet phenomenon into a compelling indie narrative. Track Suit Man embodies the shameless, self-entitled frequent traveler who cuts lines, monopolizes overhead compartments, and employs any means necessary to secure priority boarding, regardless of social etiquette. Rather than following traditional comic conventions, this series functions as a collection of ridiculous escapades presented through a storytelling format that echoes social media content.
Lenovations Press doesn’t follow the crowd—they forge their own path. From reluctant government operatives to displaced heroines and hilariously obnoxious travelers, each comic is fueled by passion and unfiltered creativity. No boardroom agendas. No formulaic storytelling. Just fearless, original tales made for readers craving something refreshingly offbeat.
