REVIEW: Black Cat #6
Black Cat #6 from Marvel was placed in my pull file this week. Full disclosure, I adore the Black Cat Felicia Hardy. The Spider-man storyline whereby she gets “bad luck” powers is among my favourite. The recent Symbiote Spider-man series by Peter David and Greg Land was fantastic because it went back to the time when the Black Cat and Spider-man were a “Thing”.
But back to the current title. Issue #6 introduces a new artist Michael Dowling (Image’s SFSX) replacing Travel Foreman. Dowling’s stylish, minimalist art is certainly a step up and much more compatible with the Jed MacKay ongoing storyline. Each issue comes with a gorgeous J. Scott Campbell “A” cover as well as a variant or two. I opted for the visually stunning Phil Noto 2099 Variant this week and the beautiful Terry Dodson Mary Jane Variant Cover last month. I was pleased to see the creative change because while I’m enjoying MacKay’s storyline the art hasn’t been very pleasing. Blastaar the Living Bomb-Burst in a previous issue looked like an extra from a Jim Henson production as opposed to one of the most dangerous foes ever to challenge the Fantastic Four.
The current issue opens with the gorgeous Ms. Hardy on a date with “Never Georges” Batroc discussing the ins and outs of dealing with Super-heroes such as faking their own deaths. Batroc speaks of his admiration for Captain America and Felicia of the character of Spider-man. In a parallel storyline the White Fox, Felicia’s mentor, is in a free for all with ninja-like characters. Like an aging Bond, he battles them with knives, gadgets, his fists, and even a car. The action is brisk and the patter between Batroc and the Black Cat is fun.
This is a great series that needs more respect. I think the new creative team will be making people wonder why this is the first time the Black Cat has been featured in her own monthly title.
