Ardian Syaf issues a statement on X-Men Gold #1
Last week it was discovered that Ardian Syaf had been hiding anti-Jewish and anti-Christian images in his art for X-Men Gold #1. This was done in the form of numbers representing verse from the Qur’an and anti-Christian protests in Indonesian.
QS 5:51″ in X-Men Gold #1, with ‘QS’ ‘Quran, Surah,’ i.e. Quran, Chapter (Surah) 5, verse 51.
The Indonesian translation of 5:51 read: “Oh you who believe, take not the Jews and the Christians as leaders/advisors.” Syaf referenced this verse is because he supports the protest against the Christian Governor Ahok in his province of Jakarta, Indonesia.
The 2nd of December was chosen by the hundreds and thousands on the march against Jakarta’s Christian governor Ahok, demanding he be arrested and prosecuted for blasphemy for what has now been revealed, as incorrect subtitles on a video that went viral, the false subtitle to said: “People were fooled by the Qu’ran”. An anti-Christain faction has formed in Indonesia called the 212 March movement named after the 2nd of December.
Marvel issued the following statement…
The mentioned artwork in X-Men Gold #1 was inserted without knowledge behind its reported meanings. These implied references do not reflect the views of the writer, editors or anyone else at Marvel and are in direct opposition of the inclusiveness of Marvel Comics and what the X-Men have stood for since their creation. This artwork will be removed from subsequent printings, digital versions, and trade paperbacks and disciplinary action is being taken.
