The Chicago underworld is a dangerous place where loyalty can be bought, betrayal can be deadly, and knowing too much might just get you killed.
Comic book creator Scott James is bringing readers into that world with THE MOB FILES: CASE #1 THE RAT, a crime comic that explores the dark side of organized crime, corruption, and the dangerous secrets that connect criminals and law enforcement.
The project is featured on Kickstarter, offering comic book fans an opportunity to discover James’ take on the classic gangster and crime noir genres.
At the center of the story is Tobias Lindblade, an aging Chicago tough guy who has managed to acquire a private investigator’s license and still has a few tricks up his sleeve. When a mysterious client hires him to investigate events buried in the city’s criminal past, Lindblade finds himself following a trail of murder, revenge, and broken loyalties.
His investigation leads him to Vincent Tortelli, better known as Vinnie the Rat.
Tortelli is a fixer and bagman working for Don Francisco Gagliardi, a powerful figure in Chicago’s criminal underworld. For years, Vinnie has operated within the mob’s world of backroom deals and dangerous assignments, but now the federal authorities are closing in.
Facing the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence, Tortelli finds himself under pressure from FBI Agent Donohoe, who wants information about the murder of a local judge.
With the threat of 30 years behind bars hanging over him, Vinnie agrees to cooperate, setting in motion a chain of events that could expose dangerous secrets and put his own life at risk.
Unfortunately for Vinnie, the people he is dealing with have their own plans, and not everyone wearing a badge can be trusted.
The story draws on familiar elements of classic crime fiction, including mob bosses, hired killers, crooked lawmen, and private investigators struggling to uncover the truth in a world where nearly everyone has something to hide.
What makes THE MOB FILES particularly interesting is its approach to the criminal underworld. Rather than simply presenting a battle between gangsters and law enforcement, the story explores the relationships and betrayals that exist on both sides of the law.
The result is a tale where survival often depends on knowing whom to trust, and making the wrong decision can have fatal consequences.
James previously introduced The Mob Files to online readers through the Tapas digital comics platform, where The Rat began appearing in March 2020. The story was presented in installments, introducing readers to its cast of Chicago criminals and the investigation surrounding Vincent Tortelli.
With THE MOB FILES: CASE #1 THE RAT, James is bringing attention to the project through crowdfunding, reaching comic book readers who enjoy independent crime stories.
Crime comics have a long history in the industry, dating back to the popularity of gangster and detective titles during the Golden Age of Comics. While superheroes eventually became the dominant genre, crime stories have continued to find an audience through publishers and independent creators willing to explore the darker corners of human nature.
THE MOB FILES follows that tradition, offering a story built around murder, organized crime, and the consequences of betrayal.
For readers who enjoy hard-boiled private investigators, morally compromised characters, and stories where the distinction between hero and villain is not always clear, Scott James’ latest Kickstarter project is worth investigating.
After all, in the Chicago underworld, being called a rat is dangerous enough. Actually becoming one can be a death sentence.
