With Halloween right around the corner—and after spending the past few weeks binging all four seasons of “Creepshow” on Shudder —it feels like the perfect time to review the latest issue of this legendary anthology series.
Now in its fifth volume, it still delivers the chills and thrills of the movies (just parts one and two; NO ONE talked about the abomination that is “Creepshow 3”). This latest installment features two stories. First, Tyler Crook tells the tale of a devoted husband who goes to extreme lengths to protect his loved ones from beyond the grave. Then Chris Killian, Andrew Sanders, and Baldermar Rivas tell the story of a former corrections officer imprisoned in the exact cellblock he used to patrol. Once again, this issue doesn’t hold back on the horror, delivering a fast pace, surprising endings, and twists no one will see coming—all of which make this franchise more enduring than ever. Tyler Crook’s entry blends timeless romance with supernatural elements and, in true Creepshow fashion, is extremely unsettling. It also brings a surprisingly touching quality that makes the story remarkable. In contrast, the Chris Killian/Andrew Sanders/Baldermar Rivas installment brings out the best in body horror, and its claustrophobic setting may well haunt readers. The prison backdrop is a perfect fit, enhancing the grim reality of incarceration and delivering some frightening moments. The emotional component also pays off with a nice twist. “Creepshow”’s latest volume doesn’t skimp on the horror; it embraces it fully. That will feel like a comfort to longtime fans, and this issue is the perfect read for the Halloween season.
