Cover Date: October 2026
Rating: 8.5/10
Originally published as a three-part feature in BOOM Studios’ horror anthology “Hello Darkness,” this story is collected here as a one-shot. It follows Cassie Cooper, a girl who tries out for her local baseball team, only for the game to take a literal demonic turn and pull her and her rowdy teammates into a bloodsport deep in the fields of Hell.
The concept cleverly mashes up movies like “A League of Their Own” and “Field of Dreams” with elements of “Creepshow” and a random Rob Zombie movie. The story leans into its demonic, chaotic elements, turning baseball into a more frightening game tied to the pact Cassie made to save her grandfather from Hell. Although the opening takes its time setting up the premise, the later chapters dive into the hellish elements, keeping the story moving as it builds toward something more horrific thanks in part to Sam Humphries’ sharp, captivating dialogue, which makes it easy for readers to relate to Cassie and the other characters. He also uses a modern, youthful approach that feels innovative rather than campy, bringing plenty of brightness to this delightful horror romp. Eleonora Carolina’s artwork brings out the story’s cute side before quickly shifting to a bloody, demonic tone, giving it a distinctive feel. The horror remains effective without sacrificing the elements that make the story frightening. This demonic sports slasher feels perfect for Halloween, blending horror with a touch of erotica. “Cassie” keeps readers captivated with the chilling tone, while reminding us that America’s pastime will never be the same after this one-shot.
