This new series from Image Comics combines a dark buddy comedy with Hollywood neo-noir, centering on an egotistical animal trainer, Dr. Kermit Groedan, and his client, an Academy Award-nominated ape named Amigo. After Kermit assaults a late-night talk show host for insulting Amigo and is then attacked by a jealous husband, Amigo kills the attacker in a fit of rage, forcing them to flee into the criminal underworld. Such a buddy comedy might not work, but writer Eliot Rahal skillfully blends dark humor and unbelievable elements, leaning into absurdity to create an enjoyable series. The chemistry between Kermit and Amigo feels authentic, showing both strengthening and wear from their experiences, especially after Amigo’s brutal killing of a talk-show host. Using flashbacks to reveal their story adds depth and gives readers a broader view of their friendship, enhanced by Rahal’s sharp dialogue that sets the tone. Although the plot feels somewhat rushed, it sparks curiosity about whether it will conclude happily or lead to something bold and game-changing. Artist Mattia Monaco, handling art, coloring, and lettering, creates a larger-than-life, animated feel that emphasizes the expressive overtones and the series’ uniqueness. A man and his gorilla on the run might seem bizarre, but with clever character development and an over-the-top premise, this series is worth exploring—and might even drive fans Bananas!- Sorry, I couldn’t resist that last bit
