I am constantly surprised that I have found myself enjoying “cozy” tales.
This one by author Rebecca Thorne certainly fits that description.
Main character Torian Razner buys a starship, the cheapest on the lot and covered in moss. The initial question is whether it will even fly.
But the moss is actually an integrated life-support system created by an alien centuries earlier, one that becomes integral to the story.
For Razner, the ship is a vehicle of hope for her ailing sister. She will fly across the galaxy if needed to find a way to help her rather than watch death creep up on her aboard the poorly constructed space station where she lives.
On the journey, Razner and the ship meet various aliens, always a good thing in space. Books with aliens offer us, as readers, hope that something better exists out there. Within this circle of characters, it’s a bit of a happy “Star Trek,” where harmony is generally achieved.
Yes, there are moments of tension and threats to overcome, but this is a cozy, so bodies don’t pile up and blood doesn’t flow. Characters find better solutions to conflicts and problems than violence, which again is why you read a cozy.
So the joy in reading Moss’d in Space is the evolving relationships, set against the discovery of a lost space station and the race that built it.
