UNIT 99 was an old-time radio series from 1958. It was basically the TV show COPS, but for radio. It was so much better, though.
Recorded during an actual police shift of Unit 99, a police patrol car assigned to respond to actual police calls, the series gives listeners a remarkable look at police work in the late 1950s. The show had a forerunner a few years earlier named Night Watch. Both series are favorites of mine, but Unit 99 had better interviews with criminals caught in the act. And this was before Miranda rights.
There is simply nothing like these two radio series. The calls the officers respond to are often dangerous and exciting, and some feature gunplay or knives.
