Comments: Drama and court intrigue dominate this issue. There is also an unknown monster roaming free, adding an element of mystery.
Maxine spends much of the issue wandering around in search of information. Unfortunately, these scenes are not especially engaging. The story moves at a slow pace, with very little happening. Maxine is usually portrayed as both a dangerous and cute young girl, but neither of those qualities is effectively conveyed through the artwork or the story in this issue.
The opening scenes of the White Masks confronting the unknown monster fail to focus enough on the action. The fight never develops the intensity it deserves.
Colin Slaughter is a calculating and controlling man who plans his moves carefully. He knows exactly what he wants and does whatever it takes to achieve it. Cecilia attempts to stand in his way, but things do not go as she hopes.
Then there is the mystery of the boy in the locker. Just who is he? That question remains unanswered for now.
Cecilia is a true wild card, always doing what she believes is right. Colin Slaughter, however, proves to be a worthy opponent for her, making their conflict one of the more compelling aspects of the issue.
This issue shows both the fall and the rise of the House of Slaughter, setting the stage for what comes next.
