Comments: Speed Racer is not acting like himself in this issue. He has developed an attitude, and the Red Dragon, his main competition, does not seem prepared for this new version of Speed.
Racer X tries to help Speed, but his concern is not met kindly. The V-Gas is clearly affecting Speed’s personality and judgment.
The Mach 5 is illustrated as an incredibly fast machine. The spinning tires, the surrounding race cars, and Speed’s determined driving all combine to create exciting, high-energy racing sequences.
The showdown between Speed Racer and the Red Dragon is intense. Later, the conflict escalates as Speed races against Racer X.
Trixie has a heartfelt conversation with Speed about why he races. She reminds him that racing is his love and passion, just as it is hers. Her words finally break through to him, awakening the true Speed Racer and giving him the strength to do what he has to do. Watching the three racers navigate a deadly course through an active volcano is absolutely thrilling, and despite their fierce competition, they show genuine respect for one another.
We are also treated to a very touching scene between Speed and his family that adds emotional weight to the story.
Meanwhile, Racer X delivers a crushing blow against the Tiger Syndicate, creating an excellent side story that complements the main race.
Speed Racer remains a young, exciting hero who delivers a thrilling ride from start to finish.
