They explore what it’s like working for a supervillain without the usual thrills, instead focusing on a corporate 9-to-5 life. The series follows Rafael Garcia, a low-level henchman for five years, whose main goals are a pay raise, a promotion to squad leader, and proving to his ex-girlfriend that he’s serious about life. Rather than epic battles, the story highlights workplace gossip, drug tests, team-building exercises, and managing a supervillain’s social media.
While this concept has been done before, Murrieta and Schrader craft a character-driven series with sharp dialogue reminiscent of “The Office,” “Parks and Recreation,” and certain parts of “Seinfeld.” It emphasizes the mundane aspects of being a henchman, especially when defeated or overlooked for a promotion, which many readers can relate to. The comedy, charm, and oddity make this a unique read among work comedy comics. Herrera’s artwork, rough yet expressive, features strong character silhouettes and visual gags that give each character a distinctive feel, keeping the tone lively. Although Rafael Garcia: Henchman #1 may not revolutionize the work-comedy genre, its amusing moments and relatable themes make it a fun read, especially with its Latinx representation and clever writing, which is a must-see for fans of the genre.
