First Comics News: How does your martial arts training help you to be a better writer?
Matthew Jasso: I like to say that it allows me to have a better idea of how to put a fight scene together. I think some of the artists I have worked with would probably say it makes me overly particular about how the action should look
1st: What is the storyline in “Quickwire”
Matthew: Quickwire is a speedster origin where the best thing to happen to this guy is that he got powers. By that I mean, he isn’t dark and brooding or burdened by the responsibility of being a superhero. Tyler is stoked that he got powers, and his dream as a kid has always been to be a superhero. He couldn’t be more thrilled to be going through what he is going through.
1st: How would you describe Tyler Bao’s personality?
Matthew: Tyler has been a fan of comics and movies since he was a kid, and he is always ready to go. He loves riding his motorcycle way too fast, so becoming a speedster is his best destiny. He also has a strong sense of what being a hero is, so when things start happening, he doesn’t hesitate to put himself in the fire for the benefit of those around him.
1st: What are Quickwire’s powers and or abilities?
Matthew: Quickwire is a speedster in every sense of the word. As the story goes along, we will discover how it really works and what those powers will allow him to do, but from the first story arc, he can do all of the superfast things.
1st: Does Quickwire face anysuperpoweredd foes?
Matthew: The first issue is purely his origin. We see where he comes from and how he got his powers. Issue 2 is a shared story showing Quickwire gets his suit and really embraces being a superhero while the big bad’s origin plays out at the same time. In fact, the two don’t come face to face until the last page of issue 2, but that just means that their big confrontation lasts throughout issues 3 and 4.

1st: Who is the Phantom Hawk, and why will readers hate or love him?
Matthew: Phantom Hawk is a former soldier on a mission to find a cure for his failing powers and avenge the treatment of all involved in the project that granted him his powers. Unlike most superheroes, Phantom Hawk has a mission, and if, while pursuing his mission, he does some good, then that works, but it’s not his intention. That makes him different and, in my opinion, a more intriguing character.0
1st: What is the city of Crestview like?
Matthew: Crestview is a stand-in for any of the big cities in California. It’s where the story takes place,e but as the series goes on, we will see Phantom Hawk go to whatever city his mission takes him.
1st: How do the city police view Phantom Hawk?
Matthew: Phantom Hawk does his best to avoid the cops just because, in his opinion, they would stand in his way. There are two detectives, Drew and Gonzolez, who are following Phantom Hawk because he is a person of interest, but beyond that, they don’t bother with him. Beyond the two of them, most of the police force isn’t really aware of his existence.
1st: Why does Phantom Hawk do what he does?

Matthew: It’s hinted at in issue 1, but in issue, it’s really explored that he was drafted into a project that created superpowered soldiers. It was very experimental, so after a while, everything began to go wrong. He and some of the remaining members of the project leave, but once his powers begin to slowly kill him, Phantom Hawk begins to try to find a cure and the answers to what happened to him and his men.
1st: What does an Editor in Chief do at Apogee Comics?
Matthew: Nick, owner of Apogee comics, and I are defined as the creative directors of the Apogee Universe. He and I came up with a plan on how we want the first few story arcs of each title to go and where they are leading in the grand scheme of the Apogee Universe. From there, it is my job to make sure that the other writers and I are working toward that vision. I also review all of the scripts that are written to make sure that they are cohesive within their own storylines and the greater Apogee Universe storyline.
1st: If you could enter the Apogee Universe, who would you prefer to meet: Quickwire or Phantom Hawk?
Matthew: Quickwire for sure. Chances are, if you come across Phantom Hawk, that isn’t a good thing. He is not a nice guy. Quickwire and I would have a ball hanging out. We could talk about comic movies, and such.
1st: What would you like to say to the readers of your comics?
Matthew: I do my best to make sure each comic is its own story. I want the characters and the action to stand out, and both of these titles have that and more!
