Comments: Briar Rose and her traveling companions move through a landscape surrounded by death. Roop, Leadleg, Spider, and Stinger accompany her, an unlikely group bound together by circumstance and loyalty. Roop takes the lead into the traps, sure-footed and brave, willing to put himself in harm’s way for the others.
Meanwhile, a brutal war rages between the Norish soldiers and Grendrid’s forces, casting a long shadow over the journey. Grendrid and Leadleg share a complicated past; they were once in love, though Grendrid’s idea of love is twisted and dangerous. Leadleg’s feelings, by contrast, were genuine and sincere. Spider and Stinger, sister and brother, clearly care deeply for one another, their bond evident in every interaction.
Roop stands out for his attitude and resolve. Faced with overwhelming odds, he simply keeps moving forward. Death looms constantly, yet he refuses to stop. His determination gives the group momentum when hope feels thin.
Briar Rose ultimately makes a decision driven by love, one that may cost her everything. It’s a powerful moment that underscores the emotional stakes of the story.
Visually, however, the art struggles to fully showcase the characters. They often blend too much into the backgrounds, making it difficult for them to stand out. Briar Rose, also known as Sleeping Beauty, appears almost as masculine as feminine, though this does not seem to be an intentional character choice so much as an artistic inconsistency.
Despite these issues, the character interactions work well. Their care for one another feels authentic, and their shared desire to do the right thing and ultimately save the world comes through clearly.
