This week, I’ll look at issue one of “The Hunter,” the latest from Trouble Studios. The story follows Steven Conrad, a writer and cultural anthropologist with a dark secret- He is sometimes possessed by the god Herne. He transforms into the monster-hunting vigilante known as The Hunter. Now, Steven must balance his personal life and his supernatural calling. He battles nightmarish creatures and confronts the cost of his double life. Billed as a Superhero Horror-Odyssey, the comic pays homage to the Bronze Age of comics. Dakota Alexander’s passion is clear, evoking nostalgia without relying on gimmicks. The vintage ads, I might add, are a wonderful touch. The gritty, vibrant, 1981-inspired storytelling showcases superhero horror elements with energy and action. The book appeals to old-school fans who remember buying comics from spinner racks or at 7-Eleven. Alexander’s artwork fuses styles of John Byrne and Mike Zeck, capturing the spirit of early 80s comics. The Hunter blends action, suspense, and a timeless vibe, making a brilliant series that celebrates an unforgettable era.
