Conan rescued a beautiful woman, Livia. With her and his warrior companions, he enters the town of Daynt, where the people are unusually welcoming—far too welcoming for a group of strange warriors. Their hospitality is great, almost overly so, and Conan feels it in his bones. He knows from experience that if something is too good to be true, it probably is.
Once night falls, the townspeople reveal their true agenda. Only Conan stands ready to fight, but even he cannot withstand an entire town. They are all captured and thrown into a dark, dingy pit.
Athyr-Bast, a woman of wicked power, controls the town with her magic. She is evil incarnate, and she takes the prisoners for her own purposes. Conan soon finds himself thrust into a Stygian arena of death, facing a massive warrior—Krum-Va the Carver.
The true mastermind of all these vile, evil steps forward at last, revealing himself as the ultimate dark force. The artwork makes clear that this figure, if he can still be called a man, commands pure terror. The Stygian Grand Master of the Black Ring stands before Conan, a nightmare made flesh. Conan faces the giant Krum-Va in a brutal life-or-death struggle. He is forced to fight in the arena for Athyr-Bast, a gorgeous enchantress dressed in green and gold. After the bloody battle, Conan samples the rewards of survival.
Conan becomes the champion of the arena—a fierce, savage competitor. Each victory serves Athyr-Bast, granting her more power. She believes she controls Conan completely, that he is her obedient slave. But Conan’s will battles against her magic. She is powerful, but Conan is stubborn, and he will never fully submit.
The setting is an ancient age when black magic ran rampant, and evil was unchecked. Warriors fought and died, and the weak were hunted. Conan walks these lands with a steady hand and iron resolve. He is strong—a barbarian not to be underestimated.
Conan is a survivor. His massive, rippling muscles and strong sword arm are always dependable. He will fight on, no matter the odds.
Zula comes to Conan’s aid against Athyr-Bast, the evil serpentine enchantress. The two warriors face an entire city of Stygians together. The stench of magic saturates every corner of the city. Conan and Zula band together and prepare to face Thoth-Amon.
As they make their way through the dark city, they are ambushed, and a fierce battle erupts—steel flashing and blood spilled. The oppressive gloom of the city and its sinister inhabitants instill a constant sense of dread.
Conan and Zula confront Thoth-Amon, watching for the right moment to strike. But Thoth-Amon reveals the full extent of his power, and things go differently than Conan expected. The two manage to escape with their lives—or do they? The entire city and its inhabitants are now hunting Conan and Zula. They are in for the fight of their lives in this city of serpents. Will they escape?
Athyr-Bast is bent on vengeance against Conan and Zula. In the streets, the pair must fight for their lives once more. The city is dark and eerie, thick with the stink of sorcery. They descend into its depths—where a serpentine nightmare is being born. There, in absolute darkness, they battle horrors made real.
Zula surprises Conan—and the reader—with a move unlike anything expected from him.
Athyr-Bast strikes back at Conan, hitting him where it hurts most. You can feel Conan’s suffering and know he will have his revenge. She seeks his blood, and he seeks hers, should their paths cross again.
This Stygian city reeks of ancient evil, slithering and alive. Conan deals with it in his own rough, brutal way. His sword carves a path through many foes.
