First Comics News: How does being a writer brighten your life?
Devin Arscott: Writing is therapeutic for me. Not only is it a means to escape from the daily cycle, but to confront it through words and emotions on a page. It’s always been an outlet for me ever since I was a kid, and it brought me out of darkness anytime it seemed to overwhelm me.
1st: How do you go about getting writing jobs?
Devin: I typically post I’m seeking work on social media, but often in approached by other creatives who just cannot nail down their ideas themselves. Lately, I’ve kept myself from searching for writing jobs to focus more on my own works.
1st: Who is the hero Noir?
Devin: Noir is my take on vigilante heroes such as Batman, Batwoman, and others. She’s not a billionaire who’s got all the money for gadgets, but an individual who goes beyond her own status to take care of the city she was born in, no matter the cost. She’s human like the rest of us, and everyone has their faults — especially as the mayor of the city she protects during the night.
1st: What is the Gauntlet, and how does it affect Noir?
Devin: The Gauntlet was a series of obstacles set up by one of her villains, The Director. When we meet Noir at the beginning of the #0 issue, she’s bested the event and made her way to her nemesis. It affected her by giving her a rigorous challenge of the body and mind in an attempt to keep her from getting in The Director’s way, but he’s not as clever as he seems.
1st: Why should the Director be feared?
Devin: Due to his immense ego, they alone are enough to fear the man. He placed great importance on himself in the wrong way, and it turned him into a force of great evil when he could’ve settled his petty grievances and lived a happier life. Nothing is more dangerous than a man with the money and ego to force himself upon others.
1st: What is the story in “Magni the Mighty?”
Devin: Magni the Mighty is a post-Ragnarok story featuring the sons of Thor, Magni and Modi. They are thrust into a new era with all their loved ones gone and must figure out how to embrace their new status within this world for better or for worse.
1st: Who are Magni and Modi?
Devin: Magni and Modi are the two sons of Thor. Magni is the Norse god of strength, and Modi is the Norse god of courage. They are equal parts of their father in different ways, and I intend to show that within the comic over time.
1st: Did you research Norse Mythology for this comic?
Devin: I did extensive research into Norse mythology to create this comic. I think it was a few months’ worth to make sure I got certain cues for the characters as close to their mythological counterparts as possible, as well as figuring out exactly if there was anything notable that occurred after Ragnarok. Let’s just say I get to craft a lot of that narrative, considering there’s not much more to their tale after the event itself.
1st: What do the 9 Realms refer to?
Devin: The 9 Realms refer to worlds/dimensions that make up the “universe” for Norse cosmology. Every realm has different attributes and people who live there, akin to our own world of Earth/Midgard, and each has its own way of dealing with the denizens of Asgard who sit above them.
1st: What did you think of the finished “The Lion of Olympus?”
Devin: I was very impressed by how well it turned out. Usually filled with a ton of self-doubt over my own works, but thanks to my amazing collaborators Emanuele, Christopher Sotomayor, and Reed Hinckley-Barnes, it was more than I could ever dream it to be.
1st: How do you get inspired to come up with ideas for new comics?
Devin: Through my own life experiences and that of comics, film/tv, music, etc, I enjoy in my life. It’s inspiring to be inspired by all the things around you.
1st: What would you do if you had Magni’s powers and abilities?
Devin: If I had Magni’s abilities, I’d most likely do something stupid like exploit myself for absurd amounts of money to put towards those in need, as well as create comics forever. You know, reasonable things.
1st: How do you feel when you hold a finished comic book in your hands that you worked on?
Devin: Accomplished. Grateful.

Devin: Thank you to you all for supporting me through the years, and I hope to continue to bring you excitement through comics for as long as I live!
