Ninjas Meet Planeswalkers in New Magic: The Gathering Collab

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are cherished, epic icons in the childhood memories of many, and they are paving a new chapter in the world of Magic: The Gathering! Created by dedicated TMNT fans, attendees at New York Comic Con were the first to see a handful of cards and get an early glimpse of what products to expect from this new set. During the Magic panel held at New York Comic Con on October 10th, the latest collaboration with Nickelodeon was announced. Previous collaborations with Nickelodeon include other beloved series such as Avatar: The Last Airbender and SpongeBob SquarePants.

We had the pleasure of talking with some of the designers for this new set and are here with a first look at some of the cards, full of chaotic combos, witty nods, and stunning illustrations.

Beyond The Sewers

The theme draws inspiration from the concept of video game mechanics, specifically the TMNT arcade games, which feature tropes, a beat-em-up style, and power-ups. Designs will thrill beloved fans of any TMNT generation with fresh styles that stay true to their personalities.

Kevin Eastman, the original illustrator of TMNT, has also teamed up with Magic to bestow his artwork on the set’s headliner card and each of the four main Turtles headliner cards. His signature is stamped in shiny foil along the borderless artwork, which is truly a collector’s and top fan piece. Kevin Eastman headliner cards are available only in English in Magic: The Gathering | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Collector Boosters of any language.

There are 20 different source material cards in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Non-foil source material cards appear in Play Booster and Collector Boosters. Traditional foil source material cards are exclusive to Collector Boosters.

Sneak is a new mechanic, but it is very similar to the existing Magic mechanic called ninjutsu. When we started this set, the very first mechanic we put in was ninjutsu. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set is kind of built around ninjutsu. We took this opportunity to clean up the ninjutsu mechanic and make it work within the rules. But the primary reason we did this is so we could make a new, cool card that allows you to put Sneak on Instants and Sorceries. You can sneak attack past your enemy’s defenses.” – Eric Engelhard, lead game designer for the Magic: The Gathering | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set.

Turtle Power Commander Deck

This Commander Deck offers a unique perspective for any Magic commander player. It features multiple commanders, each with their own distinct mechanics. Additionally, the introduction of mutagen tokens brings a new dynamic to this set and will play a significant role throughout the deck.

“Each Turtle maps extremely well to exactly one color of Magic. Leo is White, Donatello is Blue, and we stayed consistent with the entire suite of Turtles.” – Eric Engelhard, lead game designer

Furthermore, with five colors of Magic and only four turtles, that left the last color for the Turtles’ sensei, Master Splinter. Black has always been associated with rats in the history of Magic, so it felt like fate for the team to tie it together.

The Commander deck: Turtle Power includes:

  • 1 Ready-to-play 100-card Commander deck (1 Traditional foil face commander wth borderless art, 5 Traditional foil featured commanders with borderless art, and 94 Non-foil cards)
  • 10 Double-sided tokens or punch-out counters
  • 1 Deck box
