Fantastic Four #1 – The Fantastic Four is having a banner year with a new movie just weeks away, and now we’re blessed with a new volume of their title that starts rocky at first but catches on as it progresses. The story kicks off with the four of them being displaced throughout Earth’s history, thanks in part to Dr. Doom. Right from the start, Ryan North does not disappoint as he introduces layers of drama and excitement within his script, keeping readers on their toes when it comes to guessing where the FF are scattered throughout time, as well as the steps they take to get back to their own time. This new arc balances blockbuster elements with vivid storytelling that shows how North knows the FF to their core and continues the original tone of the series, which both old and new readers can enjoy. Humberto Ramos and Victor Olazaba definitely bring their A-Game to this series, thanks to their excellent attention to detail and their energetic range, making them the perfect choice for this title’s art team. Not to mention Edgar Delgado’s coloring, which again elevates the art to great heights. This new volume of FF is the perfect jumping-on point for anyone looking forward to the upcoming movie. While some fans might want to see the team together rather than separated, it’s the perfect time to get into the World’s Greatest Comic Magazine while celebrating the team.
Fantastic Four: First Steps # 1– This tie-in delivers a delightful and action-packed origin tale set in the MCU that only adds to the FF’s return to the big screen. Set four years after the team’s debut, the tie-in gives the readers a retelling of the origin may find it a retread but for those new to the FF may find some valuable insight into the team’s dynamics and the chemistry that have amonst themsevles and it should be noted that The Mole Man (An FF villian primed to make his cinematic debut) comes off as the most menacing protagonist in a way that mirrors his comic book counterpart and what makes this a special tie-in is the retro packaking that features many ads from the 60s while being chaming and deligtful thanks in part to the all-star creative team of Matt Fraction and Mark Buckingham while diving into the celebrity aspects of the team that only adds more context for the movie; One of the many MCU tie-ins that has a thoguhtful tone that plays into the vintage era, it’s the perfect way to get fans energixed for the Fantastic Four and the MCU as a whole.
The Unchosen # 1– Superstar artist David Marquez makes his Image Comics debut (not to mention his debut as a writer) in a new series that brings a new wrinkle to the fantasy genre that appeals to YA readers as well as Anime fans in a story of 13-year-old Aida who wakes in a city laid waste by a massive explosion-a scene of devastation that SHE caused. Pursued by rival forces wielding incredible powers, she must discover who truly wants to help her and the truth behind her mysterious past. Marquez simply does not miss a beat due to his stellar artwork that always amazes on all levels, and his writing shows promise, but with some work, he can be the total package, while not being known for his art, mainly because the premise is off to a strong start and the unique feel to it only makes this a series that is worth checking out.
