Godzilla Vs. X-Men #1 – The latest installment of Godzilla vs. The Marvel Universe revisits the past, where Godzilla confronts The Children of The Atom, remarkably, facilitated by a Sentinel amalgamated with a Kaiju. The involvement of X-Men luminary Fabian Nicieza in crafting this monumental narrative represents a delightful surprise, attributable to the brilliance of his script in exploring quintessential elements of the X-Men while presenting an unconventional perspective on their encounter with Godzilla. Nicieza skillfully develops their personalities and demonstrates how both Godzilla and the X-Men share a common connection as they are perceived as outcasts in a society that fears them. The narrative vividly portrays how the X-Men would engage in combat with Godzilla. Emilio Laiso’s artwork immediately captures attention as he accentuates the most captivating moments of this one-shot, ranging from Sunfire battling Godzilla to the latter undergoing a psychological examination by Professor X. His meticulous illustrations shine brightly throughout these pages. Does this one-shot present a distinct atmosphere compared to its predecessors? Indeed, and in doing so, it offers yet another perfect avenue to observe the King of Monsters integrating into the Marvel Universe with his destructive charisma.
Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #1 – Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley reunite for a new Invincible spin-off centered on Battle Beast, which is one of the most gruesome yet innovative titles to emerge from Image to date. Set after the events of Invincible #19, Battle Beast retreats to his vessel in search of a challenger capable of ending his life. While perusing this issue, it is astonishing how Kirkman transitions from the bright, hopeful realm of Invincible to a relentless sci-fi setting that is destined to appeal to any Invincible enthusiast, all while preserving familiar aspects, such as a recap of Battle Beast’s origins. Ryan Ottley excels in his artistic portrayal of Battle Beast’s combat techniques—viscerally bloody as he employs both weapons and teeth to rend flesh from his adversaries—while enriching the sci-fi elements established by Kirkman. This series reunites the “Invincible” team amidst considerable excitement, successfully reintroducing a fan-favorite character who is finally receiving due recognition. Kirkman shines in offering a thorough examination of his characters, delivering impressively with Battle Beast, delineating what constitutes him as a formidable warrior. Ottley does not hold back on the gore in this series, serving as another standout feature, making this new title captivating for both long-time and new Invincible fans, who will encounter a terrifying sci-fi narrative that spares no severity, and we eagerly anticipate it.
Spider-Verse vs Venomverse #1 – Indeed, it was inevitably going to materialize, but Marvel has presented what could be one of the most extravagant Spider-Verse arcs to date in Spider-Verse vs Venomverse. This narrative resembles another “Secret Wars” event, with both Spider-Man and Venom commanding their alternate counterparts in an all-out confrontation, thanks to the Web-Heart and Hive-Mind orchestrating the battle. Writers Mat Groom and Kyle Higgins have executed an outstanding task in establishing this Multiversal event that excels in storytelling; although the majority of this issue primarily focuses on exposition and plot development accessible to new readers, it continues to offer an enjoyable experience for aficionados of both Spider-Man and Venom. It does not feel like a mere reiteration of past Spider-Verse events or any Venom narrative arc; instead, it highlights the best aspects of the Multiverse, elevating the stakes for the upcoming issues and delivering a clash for the ages.
Supergirl #1 – The latest volume of The Maid of Might’s ongoing series, crafted by writer/artist Sophie Campbell, is a genuine celebration of the character. It pays homage to her Silver Age era while presenting a fresh and innovative modern context, allowing her to reconnect with her roots with joy and pride. For the first time in a considerable duration, Supergirl, now reestablishing the Kara Danvers identity, emerges from Superman’s shadow and the Superman family to discover her own path. Kara’s hometown of Midville serves as a charming addition that evokes a significant sense of nostalgia from the 1960s, imparting considerable charm to this series. The Silver Age tributes are prominently displayed, granting Kara the necessary character development to cultivate her own existence. Campbell succeeds in presenting a Supergirl narrative that constitutes an exciting new entry for the character while placing considerable emphasis on her world and supporting cast. Although she tends to reiterate certain plot threads from “Power Girl,” this remains a fresh interpretation of Supergirl that deserves attention.
