SUMMARY: While on a field trip to observe a meteor shower Jeff Burton discovers a wooden staff that is bursting with cosmic power so he does what any mild-mannered school teacher and father would do, he puts it in the local lost and found bin – WAIT! No, he doesn’t, he uses it to become the new Super Power of the Prairies – Auroraman! Harkening back to the days of fun superhero comic books the Adventures of Auroraman is a wild and zany all ages adventures with a dash of Saskatchewan and Canadian lore mixed in and the wacky dial turned up! From crazy old men to killer snowmen, Auroraman must defend the small city of Humboldt and surrounding area from all kinds of threats while still being sure that he has his students’ homework marked and that his kids have done their chores!
COMMENTS: I knew that Auroraman was a Kickstarter. But I didn’t pledge. I just wasn’t sure and we get a ton of pitches on millions of Kickstarters. It’s hard to know what’s good and what’s not from a Kickstarter pitch, even if you review comics. Martin Boruta wrote a wonder piece on the Auroraman Kickstarter. But he is the editor of the book, I’m sure he liked it. Then I saw the preview for Adventures of Auroraman #0 and it was from Chapterhouse. That also surprises me since it was originally by CCBA. Now I love the Pitiful Human-Lizard because it’s a different take on the superhero; so when I think of Chapterhouse, I think it’s going to be different, and exciting. I read the preview and the writer Jeff Burton is the star of the comic, now that is different. The download is just 99¢ so it’s affordable.
The first story is “AURORMAN!” a mini origin tale that shows who Jeff is, and apparently, he is a school teacher and a fan of the Jack Knight Starman. The story was short but had a lot of promise. Basing the story on himself Jeff manages to capture the joy of his personal life and blends that with being a superhero who rescues cats from trees and fights villainous snow men.
In I’LL BE THE GREATEST FAN OF YOUR LIFE the art was fun and quirky but the lettering is horrible. As for the story itself; we have family, magic, mystery and a cliffhanger, I wanted more.
THE ADVENTURES OF LIL AURORAMAN AND FRIENDS! This is a one page short and the art is perfectly suited for this type of kids story. It is very cartoony and cute. The kids go to Summer Camp in the tradition of Camp WWE. We see littler versions of Big Nick, Auric, Nelvana, Dixon of the Mounted, Johnny Canuck and Atomic Man. I have no real idea who any of these characters are; I have heard of most of them but never read any of their stories but as little heroes they are cute.
This was a Zero issue and did exactly what a 99¢ Zero issue is supposed to do. There was a cool introduction, a sample of the story telling and each story left you wanting to see what happens next. So I am looking forward to the next issue.
