Hundreds of young Libyans attended Tripoli’s second Comic Con festival on Friday, some dressed up as characters from American and Japanese comics.

Photos published on social media from the convention caught the attention of the Libyan Special Deterrence Force who claimed the images caused “a widespread public outpouring of criticism”.

The convention ended early when The Rada Special Deterrence Force, led by Abdul Raouf Kara, raided the Comic-Con arrested over 20 organizers, participants, and visitors.

Six members of the main organizing committee are reported to be still under arrest. They have been accused of a number of crimes against public morals and Islam. The crimes include agnosticism, atheism, holding masonic ideas, believing in Halloween, distorting the minds of youth, and kufer (abandoning Islam).

They were also accused of inciting violence through some artwork which depicted knives and violent scenes. Some art work was confiscated as evidence.

Organisers of the Comic-con were shocked by the actions of the Special Deterrence Force because they had obtained official permission and approval from the Nawasi Militia Force to stage the event.

Attendees who were arrested and then released, claim to be been beaten by the Special Deterrence Force while under arrest, they also had had their head shaved bald and were given a religious lecture. They were told that Libya is a Muslim country, not a liberal country.

Special Deterrence Force released a statement, in English via google translator. “The Special Deterrent Force has followed up on social networking pages of images that have surprised the public in a campaign of widespread criticism by some of the people participating in the Comic Con Festival, which was overseen and organized by SIGMA to organize the exhibitions with the same general.

It is necessary to address these destructive phenomena and fight it, which prompts the dissemination of pornography and feed the minds of adolescents and motivate them to kill and the use of sharp tools to cut the parties through famous cartoons.

Such festivals derived from abroad exploited the weakness of religious faith and their fascination with foreign cultures. One of the main reasons why these phenomena permeate our society is the abandonment of the family from its supervisory and educational role towards their children.

Organizers and supervisors of this festival were arrested for presenting them to the Public Prosecution for their acts of dishonesty and public morality.

Our humanitarian and security responsibility requires us to contribute to the rescue of our youth who may be devoured by these destructive phenomena. We gathered them together with their families and to show the truth of these festivals and how their minds are fed to keep them away from their original identity and remind them and their families of the danger of these phenomena.”
