FAITH: A Witch’s Halloween
On Halloween, both the Kid AND the Witch in me come out…er maybe that’s EVERYDAY but on Halloween they both have special THINGS to do! We decorate, create a haunt for the neighborhood kids, oh and all the adults love it as well! After the Candy has been given out and our spooky make up washed off our faces, I create a Ritual.
This Halloween Night, Jim and I will remember our Family and one special friend who has recently joined them, Brian David Wolfe.
Talented, Sweet and a lovely soul…we’ll reach out and tell him that we miss and love him.
For those who are truly curious about a Witch’s Halloween, my friend, Raven Grimassi, noted Occult author, has been so kind to share a crash course for Muggles!
Thank You Raven!
In modern times the ancient celebration of Samhain has been adapted to contemporary celebration. Occurring precisely between the Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice, Samhain is regarded as the moment when the gateway between the worlds opens and allows passage to and from the Otherworld. It is the time when ancestral spirits can return to the world of the living.
It is often the fate of mystical themes to become diminished in common application. In this light we can better understand the popular modern experience known as Halloween. Our distant ancestors believed that spirits of the dead returned at this time to visit the world of the living. Offerings of food were left to appease the dead. Today this is represented by children dressed in costumes roaming the streets, and receiving candy in order to avoid their possible ill will. This, of course, is the meaning of “Trick or Treat” that is rooted in past beliefs and concerns.
Witches have long been associated with “spirits of the dead” in ancient literature and writings. One of the earliest mentions of Witches in the Christian era is that they gather at the crossroads to communicate with the dead. In the classical writings of Homer, the Witch known as Circe knows the location of the Gate to the Underworld. In ancient tales she directs seekers to that realm who wish to communicate with the dead.
At the core of Samhain is a respect for those who have come before us, the beloved ancestors who have given us lineage. We, the living, are the keepers of the living river of blood that flows through time from one generation to the next. The blood that flows within us carries the ancient life force. This is the past, which is present now and moving towards the future.
