Independent comic book creator and Man in The High Castle star bring comic book adaptation of popular novel to Kickstarter

After a chance online encounter, comic book creator Chris Dickens found himself on the telephone discussing his comic book series, Vigilante Project, with one of his favorite actors. Dickens recalls, “I’m a big fan of actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa’s work, so naturally I thought of him to play the villain in our story.” The conversation wasn’t all positive, Dickens reports. “Upon learning more about the character, Mr. Tagawa said he was tired of playing bad guys. That conversation is what led me to The Ronin.”

As a child in Japan, Tagawa grew up hearing the story of The Ronin, based on a Zen myth. The myth was written into novel format by late LGBT rights pioneer and activist William Dale Jennings in the 1960s. Speaking of his conversation with Tagawa that day, Dickens recalls, “He recommended that I read The Ronin because it had an amazing villain, and also because there was growth and redemption.”

Despite his reputation for playing bad guys, Tagawa is known for being easy-going and for his sense of humor. Dickens reached out to Tagawa again, this time for a different reason. “I loved The Ronin,” Dickens said. “I wrote him to say thank you. The next thing you know, we were talking about making it into a comic book.”

Chris Dickens and Cary Tagawa Partner to make The Ronin

After contacting Tuttle Publishing about the rights to Jennings’ novel, Dickens went to work adapting the novel to comic book format, and building a team of artists to realize his vision. To secure funding for printing and distribution, he turned to the popular crowdfunding website, Kickstarter, for help. Offering his celebrity endorsement to the project and the Kickstarter campaign, Tagawa will autograph promotional material to help raise funds for production.

There is even talk of the actor taking The Ronin to film or television.

Between now and January 8th, anyone can preorder a copy of The Ronin #1 on Kickstarter.com and support this project by pledging a donation.
