Prohibition-Era Burlesque Dancers Pursue their Friend’s Murderer

October 4, 2017 – Martha’s Vineyard, MA – Winner of the 2017 Pulsar Entertainment Comic Creator Contest Grand Prize, independent creator Daniel Cooney has been a longtime fan favorite for his original graphic novel series, VALENTINE, first published in 1997.

Cooney’s second graphic novel series, THE TOMMY GUN DOLLS, is now available in an oversized hardcover. “Flappers with Tommy guns fighting the mob and deep intrigue make[s] this a page-turner.” (Pixel Pop Network) Cooney, whose previous works include the stylish female vigilante series VALENTINE as well as the critically acclaimed instructional books WRITING AND ILLUSTRATING THE GRAPHIC NOVEL and THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO FIGURE DRAWING FOR COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS, takes visual inspiration from illustrators such as Russell Patterson, Ethel Hays and Faith Burrows, and the writings of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Dashiell Hammett, to craft a tale of mystery and suspense.

Partly based on true events, THE TOMMY GUN DOLLS brings to life Prohibition-era San Francisco, meticulously researched and rendered in captivating black and white inks. The story follows a cross-dressing free spirit Frankie Broadstreet and a ragtag bunch of bawdy burlesque girls who are hell-bent on avenging their friend Rouletta Lockheart’s murder. Sultry and cinematic, THE TOMMY GUN DOLLS “left me literally craving to read more.” (Jon Bogdanove, Superman: The Man of Steel)

Produced in a large lavish hardcover reminiscent of European graphic novels, THE TOMMY GUN DOLLS was written, drawn, inked, edited, and published entirely by Cooney. “The rebellious attitude toward traditional Victorian roles for women was the driving force defining the characters in my story.” (Daniel Cooney, author)

Daniel Cooney and THE TOMMY GUN DOLLS can be seen at the New York City Comic Con October 5-8, 2017 in booth #1272 on the main show floor, as well as the MCM London Comic Con October 27-29 where he is a featured guest.

About the Author: Cooney is the creator of the crime fiction comic book series VALENTINE, THE ATOMIC YETI and THE TOMMY GUN DOLLS, as well as the artist and author for the instructional books WRITING AND ILLUSTRATING THE GRAPHIC NOVEL and THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO FIGURE DRAWING FOR COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS by Barron’s. Cooney holds a BFA in Illustration and Cartooning from The School of Visual Arts and was an instructor at the Academy of Art for many years prior to pursuing a full-time career in freelance illustration.
