SUMMARY: Originally created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza as a minor villain for a spin-off X-Men comic, Deadpool has since gone on to become a cult phenomenon, headlining several ongoing comic book series and causing irreverent mayhem throughout the Marvel Comics universe. For the first time, Deadpool: Drawing the Merc with a Mouth tells the full story of the character’s creation and evolution through interviews with the artists and writers who made him what he is today, including Fabian Nicieza, Mark Waid, Joe Kelly, and Reilly Brown. Filled with stunning art that showcases Deadpool’s off-the-wall comics career, from his origins in the pages of The New Mutants to his outlandish adventures with the Deadpool Corps and his team-ups with Marvel Comics A-listers such as Spider-Man and Wolverine, this book is a visually striking journey into Wade Wilson’s bizarre world.
COMMENTS: Deadpool is the coolest kickass hero Marvel ever created. However, unless your a million years old you may not understand how important Deadpool is to comic industry. DC Comics created their heroes 70 years ago. They update them and change them to fit the times but all the important characters, the “A” players are all 70 year old concepts. At Marvel the heroes were all created 50 years ago by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Although they have been publishing for 70 years only Captain America is remarkable from that time. In the last 50 years after Lee and Kirby only Wolverine has any staying power and Marvel killed him off.
The only comic book super star to emerge in the last 30 years to be total original and amazingly popular is Deadpool!
Deadpool was created the the uberly popular Rob Liefeld.
Rob Liefled created X-Force, one of the the best selling debut titles of the modern age, and he is also the creator of Youngblood one of the best selling indie comics of all time.
While Rob Liefield and Deadpool should be universally revered; fanboys are a snarky and cowardly lot! Music fanboys like to dis Nickelback, it is a regular pastime. Likewise wrestling fanboys like to dis TNA. In that same tradition comic fanboys like to disrespect Rob Liefeld despite a proven sales record and the immense popularity of Deadpool.
In Deadpool: Drawing the Merc with a Mouth: Three Decades of Amazing Marvel Comics Art, Matthew K. Manning crafts a love letter to Deadpool and his history. Matthew chronicles Deadpool’s beginnings in the New Mutants, his transformation from villain to hero, as well has his awkward time as Agent X and his re-emergence as one of the most popular heroes in the Marvel pantheon. The book is a huge coffee table book lavishly reproduced art for Deadpool’s classic covers. This is literally the one book no true Deadpool fan can pass up, a true must read!
