William West Anderson, who performed under the stage name Adam West past away today at the age of 88.

His acting career began in films in 1959. He played opposite Chuck Connors in Geronimo (1962) and The Three Stooges in The Outlaws Is Coming (1965). He has also appeared in the science-fiction film Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964), opposite Paul Mantee.

He is best known and loved for playing Batman and Bruce Wayne in the ABC series Batman from 1966 to 1968.

He has had a second career as a voice actor on The Fairly OddParents, The Simpsons, Family Guy and Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders.

“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement.

Adam West died in Los Angeles on June 9, 2017, aged 88, following a short battle with leukemia. He is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
