Green Lantern #50 this is the big milestone issue, now if it only felt like that. I mean this is Green Lantern #50 I mean Hal became Parallax the last Green Lantern# 50 and in the next volume he becomes it again. Now if I was reading comics back then I am not sure how I’d feel back but how I feel now it is a good thing to do with Hal in the story context now was it the best idea most likely; well I would’ve done it myself if I was writing Green Lantern.
My biggest gripe with this issue is that it felt more like Blackest Night #6.5 than Green Lantern # 50 because no offense Geoff but in Green Lantern# 50 it should be a little more Hal focused than all the scenes with The New Guardians and Scarecrow having a lot of scenes for a Batman character in the Green Lantern Universe. Now I know Scarecrow was a good choice for being a Sinestro Corps member but that should be done more in Blackest Night not Green Lantern # 50. Ok now I am like James Robinson in the first issue of Justice League: Cry for Justice mentioning Green Lantern # 50 as much as that issue said justice. Moving on Hal being shown as a Black Lantern was a pretty cool scene ok well his costume looked better with the matching colored gloves than Hal’s white gloves in his Green Lantern costume. The Red Lanterns are really interesting in this issue with how Mera against Aquaman and Atrocitus trying to get the Spectre who by my guess is the Red Lantern Entity that is why they need him. My favorite part of this issue was the end with Hal and Sinestro fighting over who gets Parallax and absolutely loved the Hal and Carol scene (no pun intended) but I just love the emotion the characters show and the grip Geoff has on all of them. Also Hal using his head and acting smart and with a plan I like too because I mean he isn’t just some dumb brute who goes in without thinking I like how Geoff goes into more of the depth of Hal’s character. However the ending of the issue with all the Parallax scenes I believe took too many pages I mean that scene could’ve been shorter and he didn’t need a two page splash page.
On the art side of things Doug Mahnke is good on this Blackest Night event but I miss Ed Benes from the last issue and Ivan Reis. Mahnke makes the faces looks kind of off to put it nicely but on the bright side Parallax Hal did look extremely creepy on that last page, so was his Black Lantern Spectre and Scarecrow does look really cool and scary. Anyways I feel the art could be better but was better than some of Doug’s previous work on the characters. I like the inking and the colors in it the colorist does a very good job here so the art is good in this issue but could’ve been better for an issue 50.
Overall I feel Geoff needs to put Hal in the forefront rather than having his time being taken up by supporting characters I mean well actually this wasn’t the worst issue of Hal taking a backseat but still it is done in some issues of Green Lantern. Well I hope Parallax Hal kicks ass next issue so I can’t wait for the next one. Alright see you for issue #51 of Green Lantern, Same Green Lantern Time, Same Green Lantern Channel.
