There are so many great comics coming out these days, it’s hard to know where to begin!

At the top of my list is the brilliant Velvet (Image) by Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting, and Bettie Breitweiser.  A Cold War thriller starring a kickass heroine, Velvet spans the 50s through the 70s, weaving a web of intrigue and action. Brubaker spins a helluva yarn, and Epting and Breitweiser deliver cinematic magic! Spring for the deluxe hardcover—collecting the first 15-issue arc—you’ll be glad you did.

Next up is Thief of Thieves (Image) from Robert Kirkman, Shawn Martinbrough, Felix Serrano, Andy Diggle, Nick Spencer, and James Asmus. Heists, capers, grifts, and cons come together in a dynamic and slick story of family, lies, and redemption. Kirkman conceived of the book as working like a television writers room, but the idea was abandoned by the third arc, when Andy Diggle came on board. The writing transitions are pretty seamless, though, and Martinbrough and Serrano deliver dynamite visuals.

Tim, Seeley, Mike Norton, Mark Englert, and Crank! bring us Revival (Image), an undead urban noir. Seeley’s a modern master of horror, and Norton demonstrates again and again how there’s nothing he can’t draw. Englert and Crank! add their nuanced colors and letters, subtly moving the narrative along.

And if I can indulge in a little shameless self promotion, I’d suggest the Athena Voltaire Compendium (Action Lab). Athena Voltaire follows the 1930s adventures of a globetrotting aviatrix as she takes on Nazis, supernatural creatures, and occult horrors. I wrote and drew the Compendium, a 224-page hardcover, that collects a rescripted and remastered version of the Eisner-nominated webcomic, along with other adventures…all for $20.

Additionally, I’d like to suggest Ghoul Scouts: Night of the Unliving Undead (Action Lab), the first volume in our all-ages kids vs monsters series. This volume features a bunch of misfit scouts who have to band together to save their town from a zombie outbreak. I wrote it, Mark Stegbauer drew it, and Jason Millet & Drew Browne colored it. It’s a love letter to kids adventures like the Goonies and Monster Squad.

Maybe it’s because I’m such a bookworm, but I think the reason I love giving books during holidays is that they have an extended life after the season. With that in mind, here’s a few gift suggestions to help you play Santa Claus!

Moving Target: The History and Evolution of Green Arrow by Richard Gray is the definitive tome on the Emerald Archer. I really enjoyed getting to know the author and interviewed him in my weekly column: http://tinyurl.com/GAcomicmix . Moving Target available now through Sequart.com (and most booksellers).  If you prefer to snag it at your local comic shop, order it with code NOV172163 and it will be in stores come January.

John Siuntres’ Word Balloon Podcast offers one-on-one interviews with the industry’s most interesting creators.  Siuntres, a longtime radio professional, knows how to get folks talking.  I’m driving more and I listen to this show to find out more from creators I like and to learn about new things from creators with whom I’m less familiar. The podcast is free, but you could make someone a part of the League of Word Balloon Listeners with a gift donation.  Find out more at: http://wordballoon.blogspot.com.

In Lady Action: The Sand of Forever, author Ron Fortier delivered a thriller cocktail that’s one part Modesty Blaise, one part 007 and one part Indiana Jones.  But it gets even better, as Airship 27 just released the audio book version. I think that Kalinda Little does a spectacular job reading it, but find out for yourself here: http://tinyurl.com/LAaudio

Michael Eury’s Back Issue Magazine celebrates comics of the 70s, 80s and today with insightful articles and columns. Sometimes I’m afraid to pick up an issue because I can never put it down!  A year’s subscription would make an enduring gift that fans will appreciate throughout the year. Subscriptions available here: http://tinyurl.com/BackIssueSub. And Eury’s

This fall, I bought a copy of Classic Comics Press’ Kelly Green: The Complete Collection by Stan Drake and Leonard Starr from Emil Novak at Queen City Comics. I promptly wrote about how much I enjoyed it here:  http://tinyurl.com/KellyGreenComicMix.   Classic Comics Press Publisher Charles Pelto does a great job with all his books (available here:  www.classiccomicspress.com ) and you can’t go wrong with any of them for gifting.

The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide always seemed like a “must have”, but each year, publisher J.C.Vaughn and his merry band make it even more and more “must have-ier”!  I especially liked Jim Steranko’s Batman cover on this year’s edition.

FanSets is a company run by fans for fans – and it shows. They have created gorgeous enamel pins featuring characters from Star Trek, Valiant, DC, Harry Potter, Firefly and more. Available at your local comic shop or FanSets.com .

I haven’t completely finished Craig Yoe’s Super Weird Heroes even though I wrote about it earlier this year here: http://tinyurl.com/CraigYoeComicMix.  That’s because it’s so much fun that I just don’t want it end. The good news is that I understand he’s working on a sequel!  (And Michael Eury’s Hero-A-Go-Go has a different focus, but’s a fantastic book that I can highly recommend too.)

All the best to you and yours this Yuletide Season!

I will happily recommend
Twomorrows “Reed Crandall: Illustrator of the Comics” by Roger Hill,
as well as IDW’s Reed Crandall EC Artist’s Edition.
For younger readers, I think Abrams’ “SpongeBob Comics Treasure Chest” is a nice collection, in a cool slipcased hardcover edition. That volume also includes work of mine, from a series of Mermaid Man back-up stories, written by Derek Drymon.
For a smaller budget, a trip to your local comic shop can’t be beat!
Ask the cashier for specific recommendations based on who you are buying for. Or buy a gift certificate.
Enjoy the holiday season!
